Basically I am searching for a practical effects shop who can create a practical model, for stand-ins, when not using visual effects based on concept art for an upcoming short.

I have no idea where to turn for this. VFX - I have many of ideas. But I don't want to use visual effects the entire time. It's only minor movements. But I don't know where to look.

Anyone have any ideas of where to look to accomplish something like this?

Are you really in Ithaca? (Lucky you!) Try finding some robotics or mechanical engineering students at Cornell - and maybe an art or theater student as well, for the aesthetic finish.

Actually, come to think of it, I have and old Quechuamasi I traveled through Bolivia with, who lives in Ithaca, and used to do a lot of effects/prop work... try to get in contacvt, perhaps, at http://www.podunkfarm.net

Forgive me but I have no idea what a Quechuamasi is. Haha.

And yeah, I go to school at Ithaca College actually. Live in Utica, New York when I'm not in Ithaca. Small world eh.

So that farm website is the contact for him? Looks like Charles something esquire has something involved in it. That him?

Yes... he's been through a few career changes (many!) - I don't know what he's up to right now but at the least can likely point you in the right direction if you're interested in something in the area. Anyway, he's a fun guy!

My goal was always to settle down in Ithaca... it just hasn't worked out that way. If you want to become a Quechuamasi, you can take some Quechua classes on the other hill...
