DIY Vibrating 35mm Adapter for cheap

Wow. How do you stick the little rod on the white "nylon screw" thing?
And how do you mount the motor on the GG holder?
Also, does your GG holder vibtrate properly?
I have the similar design but I can't get it vibrate properly.

It might be a stupid question, since nobody answered me before, but I'm gonna be persistant and ask again. What exactly does a vibrating focus screen do? Is it for lower DOF or...?

The vibrating screen serves two purposes:

1. since the ground glass has grain, it will usually show up in the videotape but if you vibrate the gg, the movement of the glass makes the grain "disappear". This is usually far more critical when shooting in high def. If you shoot in standard def, your resolution is such that it may not make a difference and you can use a "static" gg holder (e.g., no motor used).

2. The vibration will also (hopefully) shake off dust particles that land on the gg. They too will show up on your video, more so when taping in high def.

I'm sorry. Still not getting it :( I can see why the vibration will help reduce grain, as you say, but why would you have a focusing screen in the first place?

Dreamish
I drilled the screws with a really small drillbit then I attach it to the rods with hotglue. You might want to try other types of epoxy as well. Sillicone sealant will work well too but that needs 24 hours to dry. It does vibrate properly as I have got a bigger vibrating motor and use 3 volts instead of some other designs which uses 1 battery of 1.5 volts. The pancake one I tested before did not work well.

Thanks.
I used small carbon fibre rods instead of metal rods.
However. There are 2 problems related to the vibration.
1.)The mass of the offset weight on the vibration motor is not enough to vibrate the GG holder. Causing high frequency motor vibration without vibrating the GG holder.

2.)Heavy offset weight on the vibration motor cause low frequency high "amplitude" vibration. However it will vibrate the whole camera...

I'm still trying to deal with these problems.

Dreamish,
Carbon fibre rods are too stiff in my opinion. I used them before and it's not good. Go to any hobby store that sells radio controlled planes and helicopters and you will find thin 0.5mm or 0.2" brass rods/wire. These are more flexible. Also try to find a bigger vibrating motor. If you can't get a bigger motor then make the rods longer. This is not ideal as it might interfere with the position of your PCX lens. Here's my motor in action http://www.vimeo.com/1326721

How does the ground glass stay in the holder you made? I also ordered one from jetsmodels but got no response. Also, how do you keep the holder in the thorlab tube? And do you have a picture of the adapter on the camera? Thanks

PCX lens (plano convex lens) is to even out the light falling on the focusing screen. Without it you will get some vignetting /hotspotting especially on very fine ground glass. The rods are part of the gg holder package.

Hi there, just to let everybody making their own 35mm adapters know that this seller camera_ace from India advertises a +10 macro filter. DO NOT buy this as it is only a +7 or +8 at the most. I tried it in my 35mm adapter and it cannot zoom in as much to go past the vignetting as the +10 one I got from china. Here's the ebay link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=140242498742

I put the rings side by side with my +10 one from china and I could see that it was different. This is the good one I bought and it is very good. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=140238495385

I actually make my own ground glass holder using a cnc mill. I used to make the gg holder using styrene, the kind they use for architectural modelling and railroad modelling. I used spring steel for the vibrating legs. It is now welded and is much stronger than my previous version. pics here. more info on my blog www.gt35pro.blogspot.com
