Petrol bag for SD 302 and Fostex FR-2

on a slightly different point,, how do you find the battery life on the FR-2? i used one over the weekend. it was a neat recorder with pretty intuative interface, but i found the battery life HORRIFICALLY bad! i got through 16 Pro Cell AAs in 2 days of very light documentary shooting (about 3 hours actual recording over 2 days)

Yup, the FR-2 eats batteries like popcorn. The folks over at Trew Audio hooked me up with an NP-1 battery cuff that plugs into the DC input, so now I can get a full day of recording out of a single rechargeable battery. Perhaps the best part is that I don't have to muck about with 8 AA's when its winter and I've lost all feeling in my fingertips.

There are plenty of used NiCAD NP-1 chargers floating around; left over from all the decommisioned BetaCAMs.

yeah i usually rent a 744t and run it from my np-1 pack. i didnt have the opportunity this time, might rig something up if it looks like i'll be using it again

I went with the Eargonizer 2 for my 302/Tascam HDP2 combo. It's a beast, but I was really paranoid that I'd want a bigger bag eventually.

Everyone seems to like the Petrol bags here. Is there something wrong with Porta brace? They make custom bags for several types of equipment. I have two. I think they could be made a little better for the price but they've held up well and again they custom fit my Sound devices equipment. They really thought of everything. I've always noticed the guys from Speed Vision use them at the track use them so I figured they were good.

They are ugly and heavy, but they get the job done and they have really nice costumer support. So enjoy them and forget about "everybody". Petrol are just heavy

I was considering an Eargonizer for my SD302, but was worried that it would be too deep... is that a valid concern? I've only seen the Eargonizer with a SD442, which looked good.

BRH: Thanks for the reminder about Kata. All my bags, except for one, are Kata, and I didn't really ever look to see what they had in the way of audio bags.

Buy Chinese or Buy American.. take your pick
Look at KATA bags.

Yeah and might I mention that not only are portal brace bags made in The U.S. But the Vermont company also saved the jobs of those laid off at another textile mill, paid to have them retrained, and increased their salaries. Add that with a custom fit. The other bags are a one size fits all type of deal. Porta brace makes a specific bag for specific equipment. My AR-7 is for S.d. 7 series recorders with openings and Velcro implemented to secure/accommodate
a 7 series recorder. Custom fit=peace of mind. Forgive me for hijacking this thread.

Your local shoe repair guy can customize all your backs. i live in brooklyn.NY and my local guy is a genius. he's from Siria but I love supporting him.

my dear the kata make its bag in china for years , exactly like petrol or any of your home tv sets .
b - kata and petrol have the same mother company which holds vinten and zacler .
petrol before was sold was in hands of usa guy who live in LA .
PETROL EARGONIZER came to the world as oleg kaizerman waisted 3 grand on stupid bags which whre made in vermont and another 2 grand to make them work .
petrol eargonizer ( all the models) are the most popular bag of its kind in usa becouse it give you ultimat unswers for any type of equip you place inside
and the last
any ergonizer come with spesial for 302/7xx series holders which rize it from the bottom .

The main selling points for me on the Ar-7 were the easy bottom access to the battery and C.F. card and the accommodation for the maximum size camcorder battery. Without that feature in particular the device wouldn’t sit flush. As far as I can tell the others, as they are not made specifically for the 7 series, would not allow a battery that hung a good two inches off the recorder. Also easy access to all four sides. As I understand the others don't allow bottom access. Those other bags, aesthetically speaking, get my vote though.

Man oleg you know a ton about gear. Do you own a shop?

Just caught above quote. I think the Ergonizer has something similar to a spacer system to accommodate the large battery.
That, for me, is not practical as a lot of my recording is engine noises/cars taking off from pits. I have to be able to monitor my battery and change it in a flash. I am able to monitor the battery without removing my recorder from the bag. I just have to tip the bag upside down. That also poses no inconvenience as there are loops that hold the recorder in the bag. If I understood the salesman right the kata and petrol down not allow such ease of access for my specific recorder. I tend to leave the recorder on for the majority of a race so battery maintenance/replacement is a must. or I could miss the heavenly sound of a Porsche 962 winding off down pit row.
