Odd Tripod/Camera Attachment for Green Screen Keying

I'm shooting a music video on the HVX, the entire thing is on full body shots on a green screen. We plan on twisting the camera 90 degrees from a normal "landscape" type of framing to a "portrait style" of framing. Still photographer's do it all the time, film/video people not so much, except for when shooting green screen stuff. There is a link below that shows what i'm talking about (scroll to the bottom of the page).

Does anyone how to pull this off? Do i need a certain tripod attachment?

Thank you so much in advance!

Normal 90 degree plate? Is this a plate for the top of the tripod that is at a 90 degree angle? Could you attach a link?

I've tried calling all the video shops LA (ProHdRentals, EVS), but they don't have anything...

Gurrilla methods?

Google for L Bracket or make it your self out of some hardware from Homedepot.

Also, look under your chair... I pulled an L bracket from the back support of an old chair that was strong enough to support a fully loaded BL4.

rreichenfeld,

This is Dave with TimelineGFX. We did those shots by using a Manfrotto 501 Fluid head on a tripod only, no 90 degree mounting plate at all.

We turned the camera and mounted it sideways on the 501 shoe plate (so the secondary assisting pin on the mounting shoe plate was not in it's intended position in front of the mounting screw on the camera, but rather to it's side) and tilted 501 all the way so it presented the Camera in a 90 degree (full right) position on top of the tripod. Then tilting the fluid head all the way gave us the shot. Hope this helps.

Thanks for responding dave,

Thanks for the advice, I'll let forward these instruction to my DP and see if we can figure it out. What was the camera you used? Did it feel the tripod could tip at any moment because of the weight being off center? We are using the HVX200, so I just want to make sure the weight of the camera won't be too much for our the tripod to hold.

I really appreciate all the responses, this should all help out our music video shoot.

Dave and everyone,

My friend has the manfrotto 501 fluid head, and he said that it wont go a full 90, did you have to do any specail tricks to get it to strech all that way? also what camera did you use?

Any other suggestions?

rreichenfeld,

We used the HVX 200. Nothing special about he way we did it. I think if your DP loosens the tension on the under dial of the 501, (just under where the shoe plate mounts it should reach the full 90 that we got.

The weight of the camera was not an issue. Just make sure the sticks are spread far enough and you should be good. when I get back into the studio again in the next couple of days I will set it up and again and see if there is anything I'm missing in my explanation.
