For more detail, this is in consideration for an academic audio lab setup with three workstations. Both throughput and seek time will be an issue (simultaneous combinations of large and small files being pulled), though the load on each client machine will be moderate.... I'm putting together plans for testing a few setups but would like to hear some field reports regarding feasibilty if anyone has experience with the current crop of Gig-E NAS devices...
Well, i think seeking/contention will be a bigger issue than bandwidth. As for audio vs. 4k video... depends how many tracks... audio can often be a lot MORE demanding, 'cause multitrack sessions involve many simultaneous files, thus a lot of head thrashing. 30 1 MBps files are a lot harder to serve than 1 30MBps file!
I just don't like to go by manufacturer claims... that's why I'll be testing!
Yeah I still don't see it being that big a problem, as long as the apps you're working with support a SAN workflow should be fine. Most audio apps that do handle this sort of thing quite well.
