Need Field Recorder Priority Advice From Phil And The Other Salty Dogs Here...

I went with a brand new Tascam off eBay for $750 and I really like it. A nice piece of gear. Tests with my 416 and EMW lavs impressed me greatly. I might mod it up down the road, however. The only cons are the bulk and a sort of plasticky-feel, but for the buck it's got a lot of bang.

Great choice... Didn't get a change to respond while you were contemplating your purchase, but I struggled with the same choices and ended up going with a modded Tascam with the Oade HD upgrade a while back and have been very happy with it.

They will mod yours. I just commicated with them about moding my Marantz. Their WEB site makes it sound like they won't do it, but they will....someone there needs to rewrite their WEB copy so they quit turning business away. You'll need yours modified for top pro performance.

10s is right about Doug Oade and their upgrades. I have a HD-P2 with the super upgrade and have put it up to the DV 702 using sennheiser mics and both were very equal. My buddy is a audio engineer and owns the DV702 and has done a ton of recording with it. We both were surprised and pleased with the comparisons. We both like each recorder better depending on which mic was used. But they were so close it was a toss up between them and it has timecode in.

I've been considering the Oade modded Tascam - for now my budget allows for either a mixer or recorder in this price range. It's nice to see that it compares to the DV702. Has anyone compared this modded version to the s/n ratio achieved when using both a good mixer and recorder, or a good mixer, sans recorder straight into prosumer camcorders?

Wow, am I glad I stumbled into this thread.
Given the good reviews here and the relatively small price difference over what B&H sells the standard HDP2 for, looks like a no brainer for me.

you dont need to mod anything , good enoth for dialog recording directly , but much better with 302 or wend in front for eacy work
dont forget if you need to run it with tc camera separated , you will need xt tc generator for normal work or place radio link from the camera tc
what may the best is denecke st-3 bos or old st to get external tc genertor

No mod is needed if you're using a mixer going into the Tascam or Marantz recorder, it has a nice line-in spec, but a mod is needed if you want to use just the recorder alone, no mixer, just mic into recorder. This is good for those times when you want to carry a lighter load and gather sounds, ambient, nature, room tones, etc... without hauling around extra weight. The Mod provides mic input preamps with no hiss.

good to know.
If that is the case, will pass then. Don't really see a situation where I would not use the mixer. Thanks for clearing that up guys.
