I have a client that I shot with last week. They are in London and asked me to shoot a piece here in Dallas for them and send the footage via Fedex on a hard drive to them. I did so. They specified 720p/16x9/HD, etc.... I shot it on the HVX at 720p as they requested. I complied and sent the drive to them in London.
Now I find out that the footage I shot was to be inserted into a marketing piece and they had previously shot the other footage in SD PAL. I specifically asked them this question when I was running through the shooting specifications with them. They sent me a clip of another interview. It was in 4x3 and I asked them if it was shot that way or if it was compressed for the web in that way? Again, they requested for me to shoot it in 720p.
I got this email a few minutes ago:
Thanks for the clips you sent us of (client name here). However, because they were in HD and NTSC, we had to transcode them to SD Pal so we could master them.Unfortunately, after transcoding the clips, I;m afraid they are not good enough for broadcast as we lose some frames in the process which gives the picture a very shuddery look.Is there any chance you could transcode to SD and lay off onto a Digibeta for me and send it over to us? I can then convert the NTSC digibeta to PAL and hopefully this will resolve the issue. We would need the tape by Tuesday at the latest.I hope this is clear. Do you think is possible?I look forward to hearing from you soon.
So here's the issue. There's absolutely no way I can go through 130 gig of P2 data, bring it into Final Cut, convert to SD, render it out and get it to a Post House here in Dallas for transfer to Digibeta and get it sent out to them today, through customs in London and in their hands by Tuesday. It's impossible. Afterall, it's Friday and noon here in Dallas.
My question, how can I guide them through some process of converting 24p HD to SD PAL on their side? They have the footage in their hands. It would be much easier and more efficient for them to do the work instead of me trying to figure it out and getting the data to them.
I'm all for accommodating a client request...but seeing as how I provided them exactly what the requested and now they realize they made a mistake, I'm not sure how this has now become my problem? Still, I'm trying to figure out a solution for them and save the day here.
Anyone have experience with converting 24p HD to SD PAL? If I can get them to give me the specific files they wound up using for the piece, I can bring them into Final Cut here, find a way to convert them to SD PAL and FTP the finished rendered QT file to them.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael
