How can I make this more like a watermark?

Make the image a mask. Then create a Levels layer on top that lightens the image and uses the mask to restrict it to certain areas of the image.
What are you doing posting around DVXuser?! Get back to work! I've been waiting for your sky replacement for about 1/2 a year now! 
Well I forgot to save the project so I won't be finishing it... poo.
I have no clue what you are talking about though... I had the face as a layer with no background, then messed with it a bit but ho actual depth, not really anyway. I don't follow the terminology you used...
