I have a question about a 28mm Nikon f2 lens MF

I already purchased a 50mm prime, and I want to make sure that if I get this 28mm it's not going to have the same field of view as my 50mm.

I bid on a lens on ebay, and it says:

"Nikon AI-S Nikkor-nc 28mm f2 lens

The Nikkor 28mm f/2 has gone thru allot of upgrades over the years, This model is the last manual focus version, and was released in the 1980`s. At that time it was one of three Nikkor 28mm prime lenses in their lineup. The f/2 was the "PRO" version of them all, and it features Nikons CRC system. The 28mm prime is a standard wide angle in 35mm photography, on a DX sized Dslr it more resembles a 50mm prime."

Is this really a wide angle lens or is it going to look like my 50mm?

Here is some more info listed:

It's impossible for a 28mm to have the same field of view as a 50mm.

That's like saying I hope this 12" long piece of string is not the same length as this 18" inch long piece of string.

The "mm" refers more or less to the field of view directly. So a 28mm lens will have a much wider field of view than a 50mm lens regardless of manufacture or build version or date.

Ok, I think I'll be safe then. I don't want to have to retract my bid, haha. If anyone else has any more input to what the ebay seller might have been refering to, please let me know.

you know I don't know what this means
"on a DX sized Dslr it more resembles a 50mm prime."

Don't know how or why that's possible. But seems for 35mm adapter usage it wouldn't matter since the focal plane is supposed to be the same a standard manual focus nikon camera ... let's see if we can get Timur in here to make sure ... sent him a PM.

Do you get a lot of distortion on it, or is it good? I want something that definitely looks wider than the 50mm, but I don't really want a fisheye look either. And is it MF or AF?

I pulled these from another thread. Actually can't remember whether the 100mm is my 85mm or my 135mm so I called it a 100mm for posting. Not a good comparison for NORMAL (50mm) to wide, but you can see the difference.

I also have a wide shot of this actor and her scene partner that I can't post right now that is with the 24mm and there is no distortion because I'm not right under her nose shooting for an effect.

EDIT: 100-ish mm

The 28mm is the lens you want. That's the standard wide lens in a kit. You want it to be different enough that it's another look / story telling tool for than the 50mm.

It will be less distorted than the 24mm. At the bottom end there is a lot of difference between wides and not as much difference at the top end between long lenses.

Look at A Little MOuth to Feed in my signature. The two shots in the bathroom dialogue scene are 28mm.

jack i think the two reference images you put upa re mislabeled.

the top image looks like a 105....

the bottom a 24....

But a 28mm lens will look wider than a 50. and it should not distort, especially glass of that calibur. the F2 is a famous lens for how wicked sharp and rare it is.
