Who knew Michael Mann's "Heat" was a remake?

Thank you so much Batutta. I read an article back when Heat came out that talked about it being a remake but I had forgotten what film it was. I have literally been asking people for the past 10 years if they know what the original was and everyone thought I was crazy. Mind you, I live in LA and everyone I know is in the film industry and most of them have an encyclopedic knowledge of films. I had been convinced I was crazy, and I just figured the magazine article was imagined. I'm glad you found this. It's been driving me crazy.

Just a note about the clips linked:

It's the LA Takedown clip I really want to see. Right? I've seen Heat 100 times and own 3 different releases of the DVD. I've seen the Heat clip. Again and again. But I could only make it about 1:50 through the LA Takedown clip before I couldnt take it anymore. So I pause and start the Heat clip. The 7 minutes of the Heat clip went by like it was nothing.

Casting is everything. Sadly, the actors in LA Takedown are still magnitudes better than 90% of the actors in the DVXfest entries. Casting.

Thanks again for that link Batutta.

The acting portion of LA takedown felt like ages. It actually felt longer than the 7 minute heat scene. But the action portion of LA takedown was well done.

Hm. I don't think the LA Takedown actors were bad (of course in comparison to Deniro and Pacino, everyone's bad). Actually, the guys in LA Takedown were just really, really badly mis-cast. That's my read. One of them in particular actually seems really good, just way too young and fresh-faced to be believable. Couple the mis-casting with really bad sound and terrible lighting, and it just looks like bad TV. They had bad hair styling too! Made them look like idiots. Poor actors, they get a bum rap sometimes.

LOL. "From the director of HEAT...."

"Hanna is the cop and the HEAT is on..."

The downtown location worked so much better for the shootout in Heat, than the Wilshire location did for LA Takedown. Interesting that it was Takedown that more closely foreshadowed the '97 N. Hollywood shootout with the residential ending.

Apparently Mann's planning on remaking it again, but this time with Rob Schnieder and David Spade in the leads...

How about this guy who is combining Heat and Collateral and calling it "L.A. Takedown"

Make sure you click to the director's profile and read his bio. Wow.

LOL...

"Chooses his movie titles and character's names according to numerology."

Well, considering his film is called "LA Takedown" and it's a Collateral ripoff and his hitman's name is "Vincent", apparently "numerology" is another name for "Michael Mann".

Another question, who has seen LA Takedown. Also it shows the differences with films shot for TV vs. films shot for theaters.

Another Mann film, shot for TV is the Jericho Mile from 1979. Pretty good film, considering it predates his first Theatrical release, Thief. It takes place on location in a real prision. Mann won the DGA award for Best Director that year (in TV).
