I found some great cheap Florescent work lights on amazon?

same thing 33 bucks at walmart home depot everyone I think starts out with these, then as they can work in "real movie lights"

they work well, not color corrected, but they look good.

I know a lot of people starting their light kits use halogen work lights and sometimes mod them out, I found this fluorescent model I was wondering if you guys thought it had any distinct advantages over halogen (or if there are any downfalls you can forsee).

I'm also wondering how this is going to translate on my picture? Anyone know of any links to some screen shots or video's shot using homebrew lighting kits (halogen or fluorescent), I've searched through 40 something pages of posts on this DIY forum and found a few threads about putting together your own lighting, but haven't seen any actual results via screengrabs or video, or any comments on the fluorescent work lights.

Thanks in advance to any insight you guys have!

sorry didn't notice they were fluors, they probably have a great deal of flicker, and green, advantages, cooler, less power needed.

geeze, didn't even think about the flicker, good thing I dropped a thread before I wasted the $ and started in on this project, thanks for getting back to me on that.

So i guess i'll build them from halogen lamps, I'm probably getting the opportunity to make a live DVD for a national tour, so I want to make a portable system that I can use to supplement a clubs lighting when their standard lighting isn't cutting it.

I'm planning on following the plans in the thread above in order to install a barn door on it and have the possibility of inserting filters if I wanted to, I think I remember reading something on google awhile ago that you can buy replacement tungsten bulbs for these halogen lights that work a little bit better for video, I can't find that again, is there any truth? Or anything else I can do to improve the quality of the lighting for the style of video I will be shooting (supplementing club lights for a show)?

We have a video on our site showing installation of barndoors on a worklight as well as a free template for cutting the sheet metal in a pre-determined pattern. I also sell the barndoor kits for those that don't have the time to chase down all the parts. Here's the links...

Hope this helps.

Does anybody know if there is an issue with dimming those generic hardware store halogen lights? I, too, am trying to build a set and figured I could make a quick in-line dimmer with an outlet to plug them into, but didn't know if they make funny sounds when dimmed or if they simply don't dim (like most fluorescents don't).

Thanks,

Peter

I haven't tried those, but unless they say they have dimmable ballasts, I'd bet that they do NOT have dimmable ballasts
