720 x 480 jpg in Vegas bars on bottom and top?

I have a few .jpgs I would like to use in a slideshow as a background for a DVD architect project.

I opened Photoshop and cropped the images to 720x480. It is my understanding this is the resolution of the standard DVD image. When I import them into DVD architect or into Vegas they have bars on the bottom and top meaning they are not fitting perfectly into the 720x480. I tried making the top and bottom bigger in PS and then Vegas and DVD arch put bars on the sides...

What gives?

OK this is ridiculous.
I conducted experiments and the size to get no Clipping is 720x528.
What?
I never heard of that before.

I think this might have something to do with pixel aspect ratio.
What effect does changing pixel aspect ratio have on final DVD projects?

If I pick square to have the 720x480 look right will it be squeezed on the screen when the client views the dvd on his TV (DVD DV pixel aspect ratio of .9ish).?

Of course and it is the aspect ratio. You just need to re-size your pictures on the playback pixel sizes, and not the reported one. For example, for 4:3 NTSC it's 656x480 after you take the aspect ratio into account, not 720x480, even if the project properties is set to 720x480.

For 16:9 NTSC it's 874x480

Here's a quick way to figure out what your picture size should be with any timeline.

Set your preview to Best Full. (Doesn't have to be Best, but it does have to be Full.) Take a still from some of your footage. Look at the dimensions of the still. That's your project frame size in square pixels. Any photo of the same dimensions should then fit.
