Macpro octo 2.8ghz, 4gb ram- Good enough for Prores HQ realtime?

I'm planning this upgrade, and would like something for the n ext 4 years... is the OCto 2.8 ghzs capable of Prores realtime, or AVC Intra editing?

I also am planning in going for the 8800GT card (512mb) is this a good option for Motion/After Effects?

Any suggestions to improve this for better HD editing performance?

Thanks,

Sergio

I have the 2.8 octo with only 2GB RAM at the moment (upgrade coming soon) and I edit pro-res hq in realtime just fine.

Not sure about the card though. I've heard some debate about whether the ATI Redeon is a better fit for the way those apps are processed (CPU vs GPU?)

Noah, thanks for the info. Jim, are you talking about the 256mb Radeon? Isn't there, supposedly, a new card coming from ATI with 512mb? Can you direct me to this discussion?

Noah, I have a PCI-X Lacie external Sata. Anyway I can put this to work on my Macpro? Would a PCie Sata card work?

I have an octo 2.8 ghz with 10gb ram -- (a little over kill) It works great. I do not have a raid setup though I have 1 1tb mybook and 1 500gb lacie dazichained together.

I'm not sure where the link is for that discussion, but if you google it, you should get something either here or on another site.

But yeah, I'm referring to the 256. Some people have said that it works better even though it is theoretically slower, because of the way the apps are written and the differences in the way the cards are designed. The GEforce is supposedly designed more as a gamers card.

But take all that with a few grains of salt coming from me.

Yes there is. I'd definitely hold off and get the new ATI card. As for what's real and not vaporware: If you don't game the 256MB ATI 2600 is better than the 8800GT in Apple Pro apps. I bought my early 2008 Mac Pro with the ATI2600 and later replaced it with the 8800GT. I'm actually selling the 2600. If anyone wants it make me an offer, but I can't imagine why anyone would unless it works in older Mac Pros. Anyway my performance in the Apple pro apps (subjective observation not benchmarks) remained the same whereas performance in Windows (Age of Conan online MMOG) went from 13-30FPS with settings about 50% to 40-60FPS w/ settings maxed, huuge difference. The 8800GT does run hot as hell though and if I didn't game I'd seriously sell the thing immediately and go back to the 2600. But I do game, and it makes a big difference so heat it is.

Jim, thanks for the info. This is, however, frustrating. Its supposed to be an upgrade!

Ming, 30% to 180% improvement? Damn! Just ordered the Machine with the 8800! :(

Anyway, still should be an improvement from my stock g5 PCI-X card (Dual 2.7ghz)

I'm rendering a project with Magic bullet Editors. The project has 38 minutes. Render time? (Stock Dual g5 2.7ghz, 128mb card) 10 plus hours! And this with a SATAII 3gb/s Lacie drive!
