HD video on a DVD-R?

I thought I heard somewhere that it would be possible to put HD video on a standard, single layer 4.5gb DVD-R (or DL 8.5gb DVD-R)... since all Blu-Ray players now read DVDs/DVD-R...

Obviously you wouldn't be able to fit a whole lot, but 5 min HD shorts and work for clients, etc. should fit...

Does anyone know anything about this?

Putting 720p or 1080i HD footage from the HVX onto a standard, cheap DVD-R burnable media would make me a happy camper...

You can do this on an HD-DVD format (R.I.P.). DVD Studio Pro will do it, so will Pinnacle Studio, there may be others. You can get about 20-30 minutes max. I've never heard that Blu-Ray can do this on a standard DVD.

I've never tried it, but you should be able to save it as a file on a standard DVD-R, using something like QT ProRes 422. Then they can play it back on their computer.

Don't know about playing it on a Blu-Ray player though.

so the xbox360 plays it back as if it were a true HD disc?

Oh bummer, that was for HD-DVD only? Does anyone know if Blu-Ray does or will support this?

I'm not interested in being able to play it back on a computer, rather, to play it back on a settop player in a home theatre on an HDTV screen. For clients who want an HD project that is short (ie under 15 minutes).

In fact, that makes me wonder if it would be possible to fit both a standard DVD version and a HD version of a project on a normal DVD-R to play back in HD on a Blu-Ray player, and SD on a standard DVD player...

No, it will play H.264, Mpeg-4 and DIVX on it's built-in DVD player, or even streamed from your computer if you are on the same network.

Well that's what I meant... what if its 1080i or 720p h.264 encoded footage and you play it on an HDTV? That would have the same net effect as playing a true blu-ray disc as far as image quality goes... right?

To fit a whole feature you'd have to encode it at a low bit-rate, so the quality wouldn't be as good, but for a short you should be able to encode it at a bit-rate as high as the XBOX will alow, which could be better than a standard feature film on blu-ray. And yes, full 1080p on an HDTV.

The Playstation 3 is very forgiving and will allow you to just put the files (h.264) on the disk without a special menu structure. Other Blu-ray players (1.1) will support a DVD in HD with reasonable quality as long as the length is short (20 minutes or less) and a proper file and menu structure is created.

So, you need to make sure your disk burning software supports the standard and allows you to burn a DVD with the correct format for Blu-ray players.

Awesome, that is great news Bob!

I have both DVD Studio Pro 4 and Encore CS3 - do either of these support this? I can't figure out how to do this...

How About making just a files you can play on playstation 3 (mp4 - h.264) as they do movie trailers on apple.com, i mean great quality. I bought Playstation 3 4 days ago and playing with it a lot testing different settings trying to crate mp4 files to play them from ps3 onto my 1080p 46 inch HDTV.

Trailers downloaded from apple can be adjusted and played back on ps3 with no loss of quality and they look superb !!! Only You have to do is to export them using quicktime pro to mp4 format leaving two streams (video and audio) utouched (pass through mode)

But creating very good quailty mp4 files from my HVX 200 is not as easy as it looks like...
