What should charge for mileage when gig involves travel?

Someone is interested in my services and wants to know what I would charge to work in cities that are two and three hours away from me respectively. I know what daily rate I'm going to give them as a videographer but I don't know what to charge them for the travel. I want the gig badly so I don't want to price myself out of it but I also want to be fair to myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Holy cow, I thought it was still 37.5!

If you have to bring a van, 50.5 is a good starting place but I would figure you have room to go up. LightsOn in Minneapolis charges $.95/mile for grip trucks, for example.

The Green Barry and ProfessorU are talking about MILEAGE charges - which are intended to cover gas, maintenance, vehicle depreciation, etc. The IRS number is a standard used in many places for that; it changes every year to reflect inflation.

You can in many cases charge for your travel TIME as well. But ou'll have to figure out yourself how much you can push your charges in your market (and with each particular client). But basically, if you could be spending the same time shooting/editing, what would youi charge for it?

Nope, the new IRS rate is $58.5 and goes through at least December 31st. Charge that for your mileage beginning July 1st, 2008. If the production won't pay or agree on the rate, you can claim it all, or the difference from what they will pay on your itemized taxes.

Electrics and grip houses will also charge a mileage rate for their trucks, which is usually based upon nothing - no federal guideline is figured whatever. It is simply an arbitrary number - like running the clock on a generator or HMI globe. Sometimes, they'll give you travel in the studio zone (30 miles in any direction from a particular intersection in LA) at no charge, then assess mileage beyond that point.

Happy Motoring!

Travel days are usually billed at 1/2 of your day rate (five hours for most). However, it is not uncommon to pay portal-to-portal either. Meaning, the technician is paid from the time he arrives at the airport and until he is dropped at his hotel where the work will occur. Flat 1/2 travel days don't come close to covering inter-continental or cross-country itineraries, so many go on actual hours in transit.

The Studio Zone starts from The Beverly Center as I recall, which is kind of random to me but I remember reading that.

I charge $5 per mile. I ride a camel and the camel requires a lot of water so that's why it's so high.

haha, j/k

I think the studio zone center is the corner of La Cienega and Beverly which is where the Beverly Center is

they took out ss taxes.... umm that doesnt sound right?!?!?!

glad to see the IRS raised it. I'm owned a few hunder in mileage, which hopefully i'll be getting this week. I'll be interested to see if they take out ss from it!
