wich one of these books is better to buy...??

If you are starting out get student Cinematography Pack. If you already know the theory and you need a reference on set, get ASC Film Manual . My AC carries the ASC Film Manual everywhere and we refer to it quite often.

Cheers.

My advice: Cinematography is a large field: camera operation, lighting, framing, movement, etc. We need a variety of sources to help us out.

1. If you're beginning, start with this book, Bare Bones Camera Course for Film & Video by Tom Schroeppel (this is the best beginners book available, it will have you up & running in 3 hours) I used this when I was teaching basic video/film making courses. Even if you're not new, it's an excellent resource because it is so clearly written and simple. And a top notch ASC endorses it as well, it's that good!

2. The Five C's of Cinematography by Joseph Mascelli. Good for Basics.

3. Shot by Shot, by Steven Katz. (it's one of the very best) If you only can buy one book, get this!

4. Cinematography, by Kris Malkiewicz & David Mullen is good.

5. A great text on lighting by Dave Viera, titled, Lighting. This will get your lighting chops up and going.

6. Grammar of Film Language, by Arijon. Crazy book but it has great examples of shot composition.

Also get the DVD, Visions of Light. It's the history and contributions of the various cinematographers over the years... this is a 100% must have $20.00 video.
