Art TubeMP USB preamp and the existence of babies.

I've been recording voiceovers and location audio directly to my DVX100B.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

ART TubeMP USB preamp.

It's only a Franklin and seems to have pretty good reviews.

I'd like to find an inexpensive preamp that would lower the noise floor a little and warm up the sound of my Heil PR40 that I use at my house.

I thought about the MobilePre, but this one is black. I like black. Actually, I guess I COULD spray paint the MobilePre.

Ideally, I'd like to find a solution that I could use in my house to directly attach to my computer to record VOs AND use as a field mixer for location work. IF there is such a device, of course I'd be willing to pay more than a Franklin for it...particularly if it's black!

I'd also like to know where babies come from AND why milk doesn't get that skim stuff on the top anymore like it did when I was a kid.

Just so you know, almost nothing that is <$1000 is likely to be a tube preamp in the traditional sense. They are basically just distortion boxes, and in fact you can remove the tube in many of them and they still work. Google "starved plate" for the gory details.

Thumbs down from me. Get a good solid state preamp over this thing.

ART makes decent stuff. Not used any myself, but I've read some good reviews in Mix magazine. Haven't seen this particular one before, though.

Ask your dad where babies come from...

Milk doesn't still have the skim stuff on the top because it's pasturized now and that removes the extra fat that caused the skim stuff on top. It's a sad world when you have to work to get a milk-stache...

(Disclaimer--I totally made that up about the milk... just an educated guess)

Lexicon makes an audio interface with a good preamp (it's a dbx amp i believe)

As far as using something as a field mixer also - it sounds like what you're looking for is a moto traveler. Not cheap, but it does what you are looking for.

I haven't used their USB products, but I've had an old ART TubeMP for... has it actually been 8 years?

Anyway, great product for the money. Cleaner and warmer than the preamps found in most compact mixers and USB audio interfaces, just don't buy it expecting it to sound like a $5000 mic preamp. It also makes a groovy DI box.

Its not really designed for portable use, though.

It's not pasteurization that does it - it's that it is more profitable to skim off the cream and sell it separately than it is to leave mixed in with the milk. And a lot of folks don't want the calories anyway - just look at the popularity of "low-fat" (boring) or "skim" (bleeecxcchhhhh) milk in the market.

Skim. Ugghhhhh. I'll run an extra mile before I drink that stuff again.

Yucky Milk-Water!

I have an original ART Tube MP I bought for studio work, but with most mics, I found it too noisy. I tried to finess the gain contols, but was never happy with it. Unless they reworked it for your version, I don't think it would be a good option.
