A Properly working DOF Adapter... Less than 1 stop light loss

Hope progress is going well with this and I hope it works out to be a practical solution for the few things discussed, namely not having to rely on the camera's handle to carry around the weight.

It's going pretty well now.

It's going pretty well now.

Kholi, here are some new pics. All powder coated and component attachable. I was also inspired to make the flip drop rail blocks and incorporate them into the component design as well as the handle. The accessories can attach seperately or to the rail spacers to save space and weight.

Wow! This thing looks like it could decimate an entire battlefield with one shot...or you know, shoot some good footage.

Good work!

Any footage up on Vimeo?

Looks like you accidentally etched the word "CAVISION" into one of your pieces :nads:

Just kidding. :D

So I had given up and forgotten about all this. Are you still planning on selling the adapter as well as the rail cage or did you scrap that plan?

Cavision

Cavision

Ya real funny! Thanks! lol I wrote more details on the rig thread post. I'm redesigning my camera to rails mount and making it component adaptable as well. in the mean time I use the cavision RPMd90 plate as it's wonderfully versatile. by no means am I trying to take credit for this very cool piece of equipment. Nor the DVX camera or the Nikon glass. But thanks for pointing it out. I'm pleased to take credit for the Adapter, Rails to tripod mount, Cage/Rail spacers, Dof Flip spacer blocks and the triangle handle mounts up top. Oh the short rails are also cavision but the 2 long (18inch) rail sets are all mine.

I will be selling this unit as is minus the DVX camera and Nikon glass. Including all the bracketry pictured, both long sets of Easom rails and the cavision short rails as well as the infamous cavision RPMD90 plate and R15B80 rail plate. Adapter and all for 2,250 usd on ebay. Can I say ebay here?
IT will be an HVX optimised unit with HVX bayonet mounting and Nikon lens mount. I am working on a production run of all pieces including complete adapters for the HVX and Sony XDCAM EX1. Just want to make sure it's all perfect first.

Vimeo is converting some footage of a paint can in a kitchen as I'm writing and it can be foind under the tittle "Easom CineDapt" or "Paint can in Kitchen" Soon to be followed by more exciting video.

Wow, that edge to edge sharpness is killer. What lens were you using there? And also, will you be making a model of your cage and adapter for other cameras...say, the Canon XH A1 for instance.

Lens.

Lens.

Thanks for noticing the edge to edge sharpness. I was surprised you could see it with the paint can footage but I looked close again and the sharp focused handle on the extreme left gives it away. I need to shoot another chart. I've put much time and development into a custom achromat/condenser combo that is 75mm in diameter, just from glass edge to glass egde. So it's actually bigger than a 72mm achromat holder. The size is part of the equation. It also houses a reverse condenser, so the condensing action is on th camera side of the achromat. This allows all of the glass to be well out of the focal range of the film plane. Leaving dust and such far out of focus. So dust is really not an issue with this adapter. It works very similarly to an LED bubble. I'm close to releasing a production run so I guess it's about time someone will reverse engineer one of these. Oh well. I think it's the only way to make a properly working adapter. The lens was a medium format Mamiya f1.8 80 mm lens. I now prefer nikon 35mm glass. The unit is optimized for medium format glass and handles the full 60mm x 45mm image area of 6.45 lenses. That's one of the reasons I used such gynormous glass. Most distortion comes from skimping on the overall glass dimension as the real usable area only encompasses about the middle 80% of the glass. So use with 35mm or cinema glass is so wonderful with this because you're using less than the inner 50% of the diameter. It's a very large very sweet spot to shoot through. With all that glass, the adapter still clocks in under 2.8 pounds. This was an important post. If you read this one, I'm glad. :) Cory

XH A1 and others.

XH A1 and others.

Will you be making a model of your cage and adapter for other cameras...say, the Canon XH A1 for instance.

I actually tested the unit with an XH-A1. I was impressed with the camera even though it only shoots interlaced. Sent the adapter home with the guy for a few days to shoot some footage. Unfortunately, he left town before I got any of it. Fortunately, He left after returning the adapter. Where are you Albert? lol

The adapter will work with any camera, the only issue is Condenser/achromat positioning to correct and eliminate any barrel distortion and of course solid mounting to the camera. I think the adapter is overqualified for a DVX or any standard def camera. With the exception of an Andromeda of course. I'm looking at optimizing for HVX, XH-A1 (through relay lens), and the XDCAM EX family. I will be using one with an XDCAM. I'm open to any cameras and am thinking of building a truly affordable scaled down unit for the $1,000 HI-Def Cam market like the Panasonic HDC-SD9 and Canon HV20/30 family. It would be in the $600 to $700 range. Amazing cameras for the price. I've seen some cameras as low $599. That would make a cinema bundle around $1,200 for the beginner. I would have liked that...

Wow!

Great work, Cory. As one who's spent a lot of time at a Bridgeport, I have to say that I really admire the fit & finish on display in your work.

That is -fully- legit. Can't wait to see how this develops!

Cage/Handle combo and the new Rizer plate.

Cage/Handle combo and the new Rizer plate.

Ok! Here's the cage/handle combo. IT looks like I will be making quite a few of these setups. I'm also going to package the whole thing as a complete unit. Rails, cage spacers, Flip drop rail blocks, Tripod balance bar, Handle and new Rizer plate for around 650 usd. The Spacers and Handle combo will be around the 325 usd mark.

The new Rizer will be called the 'Imperial Rizer' after it's inspiration, the Imperial walkers form 'The Empire Stikes Back' My goal was to make it very light while maintaining a quite rigid stance in any position and keep it affordable. The four arms and 8 rotation lock points seem to work well. I'm adding the option of a quick release assembly to adorn the plate. Again, like all the modular adaptable pieces, the new rizer will mount directly to the balance bar or anywhere along the rails or other peripherals.

Width

Width

It's 4.75 inches (120 mm) from inner frame to inner frame. I think it was Kholi who said to keep it as narrow as possible. I will make a spec sheet with all dimensions and such to post later. My thinking was, no matter what adapter one uses, the rails can be placed in font of and behind a flip prism housing or any other obstacles if necessary. I'm pretty certain it won't conflict, but not 100%. I'm shipping a number of these with A 100% satisfaction money back guarantee if the units don't work properly with all equipment. I'm sure I will have some feedback soon.
