Can one render out to Jpeg2000 format from within Vegas ?

Hi i was wondering if we could render our output to jpeg200 format probably in an avi or other container is also ok. Also will this file playback on any computer or a special codec has to be installed to playback the JPEG2000 file ?

Thanks

Yes.

Yes.

Just did this for delivery to a FCP-based post-production facility in LA.

Had to get our feature onto D-5, HDCam, Digibeta and Beta SP. Soution was to render out 8 reels, or files, of about 12-15 minutes apiece to Quicktime JPEG-2000 720P Files. Post house assembled in FCP and spit it out to D-5, dubbed to HDCam and down-converted the D-5 to the Beta and digibeta.

Worked great.

It was nice being able to stay in Vegas all the way to these last stages of post.

Although I should add that we converted to Cineform .mov before re-rendering to the JPEG-2000 files. This was a personal choice; honestly don't know if it was necessary.

Once you render out a jpeg200 based mov. Does it play back as normal on your same NLE system. What about playback on other computers ? Do they need to have a jpeg2000 codec or something ?

Should play back in Quicktime Player on any system; it's one of the standard included codecs.

Hi just one more question. Does jpeg2000 come only in a .mov container. Or is it possible to have an avi with Jpeg2000 encoding. Also can this be done within Vegas or are we stuck with .mov only. Thanks.

Morgan Multimedia has a JPEG2k codec which works in an .AVI container, both VFW and Direct-Show. It's only $30 but some of the settings are cryptic, documentation is very weak and tech support is essentially non-existent. Even though it's "Optimized for Dual Core and Quad Core systems", with a 3.2 Ghz Quad-core processor, it isn't capable of playing back HD in real-time. Nevertheless, with some experimentation to discover what the various setting are for, it can be a very good looking codec.

Pmark > FFD Show is a free codec right ? How can this be used to package a video into jpeg2000 avi ? Can you explain how ?

I just double-checked, and ffdshow has motion-jpeg and lossless-jpeg -- are these jpeg2K?

ffdshow is open-source. Google or Wikipedia will tell you where to get the latest version (it's updated continually).

After the codec is loaded, render from Vegas to an AVI. Select "Custom" from the file-select pop-up, then the VIDEO tab at the bottom. From the "Video format" list, select "ffdshow Video Codec", and then "Configure". In the "Encoder" list select whatever encoder you wish to use (motion-jpeg, or lossless jpeg in your case).

I really am not sure but i dont think mjpeg is jpeg2k.
Ive not even tried mjpeg before. I uninstalled ffdshow for a singular reason that it was giving some problems in dgdecode etc causing mpeg videos to trun green in their respective applications. So i was forced to remove it. But from Vegas whn we render out a cineform avi it look splendid. But is it a extremely lossy file which only looks impeccable to the eye or is it really a good codec for playback on a system too ?

MJPEG is essentially just like JPEG compression used for photos. It is fast and relatively universal. MJPEG2000 uses a completely different wavelet-based compression technology much like the Cineform codec. The compression ratios of both MJPEG and MJPEG2k can be varied to set the balance between datarate and image quality. MJPEG2k can achieve higher compression ratios than MJPEG and maintain better image quality. MJPEG at high compression produces blockiness and "mosquito" noise around smaller details. MJPEG2k at very high compression just goes "soft." Other than the similar names, they are completely different technologies.

You are right about the softness factor in JPEG2000. It doesnt pixellate. But John i think its only known as JPEG2000. Not MJPEG2000. Maybe you just made a typo. MJPEG and JPEG2000 are two different codecs in many respects. I doubt they are similar except in that they hail from the same jpeg group. But that said, do you know a way to make a JPEG2000 avi from within Vegas ?? or maybe some other free tools or convertor ? And how can one playback JPEG2000 on a system ? Is a codec neccesary to be installed ?

I didn't make a typo. JPEG2000 is a wavelet-based compression standard for still images and is an update to the discrete cosine transform-based JPEG. JPEG2000 has a file extension of .JP2 whereas JPEG has a file extension of .JPG. Motion sequences containing JPEG2000 and JPEG images are called MJPEG2000 and MJPEG respectively. Officially MJPEG2000 is called "Motion JPEG 2000 (Part 3)"

Here is the official JPEG2000 page:

Here is the Wikipedia entry for JPEG2000:

MJPEG2000 requires MUCH more CPU horsepower to decompress the standard MJPEG, so don't expect smooth playback unless you have a monster machine. (And maybe not even then.)

Yes, you must have a MJPEG2000 codec installed to create or play the files. I am not aware of any free tools to create MJPEG2000 .AVI files. There are a small number of companies making MJPEG2000 codecs. Morgan-Multimedia is one, although as I mentioned earlier, the settings are cryptic, documentation is very weak and tech support is virtually non-existent. That said, you can purchase this codec for $30, install it and Vegas will create and play MJPEG2000 files.

Hi John, Thanks for the info. Very valuable.
From within Vegas...
I tried making an quicktime with JPEG2000. Very choppy in playback.
I made a MJPEGA & MJPEGB. Both play flawless. But i need them in a .avi container. How can i go about doing this ?

PS: Does MJPEG A & B posses the same capacity to turn soft rather than pixellate just like JPEG2000 ???

No, MJPEG gets blocky. MJPEG2000 is based on wavelet compression which is a completely different and uses a vastly more sophisticated compression algorithm. It also requires more CPU horsepower to play smoothly.

However, at reasonable bitrates, plain old MJPEG can look very, very good and is a fairly universally supported codec. Personally, I really like the Pegasus Imaging MJPEG codec. It's very fast and looks great. It's $28 here:

By the way, Vegas v8 has a built-in MJPEG decompressor.

I found a LEAD codec for MJ2K and MJPEG. Lead also sells mpeg4 and h264 codecs etc. Maybe you can try them out... they have test versions. Only $10 per codec.

There are two types of codecs; those that are DirectShow compatible and those that are VFW (Video for Windows) compatible. Vegas is a VFW application. It appears that LAED's standard MJPEG codec is both DirectShow and VFW. All their other codecs are DirectShow only and will not work in Vegas.

Since MJ2K is based on a wavelet compression its supposed to be pretty high quality right. So will a cineform avi have better quality than MJPEG a or b and equal quality to JPEG2K ? Since its also based on a wavelet based compression right ?
