Can Vegas .mov files be integrated into FCP?

Hi,

I am a FCP editor looking to edit a video that has been captured onto an external hard drive with Sony Vegas. The files were saved as .mov files. Does anyone know if it's possible to open these .mov files in a FCP project?

Thanks,

Mike

It should be able to, especially if it's just DV.

But Vegas wouldn't capture as .mov -- how were these files created? Which codec was used?

Since the .mov extension is just a wrapper for a slew of quicktime codecs, it really matters what was the actual codec used to encode. Vegas really doesn't do QT very well. I've had success with using SHEER video codecs to export to a Mac machine in Avid, but both machines need the SHEER codec for this to work. Sama same with cineform, which is another good transfer codec.

If you can open it in the QuickTime player in the mac- yes FCP can edit it. That said, you might need to export again in QuickTime player to a more suitable for editing format such as ProRes. Not all formats are happy to play in realtime in FCP.

I upgraded from FCP 5.04 to 5.14. I still can't get Quicktime to play the files, but they now work in Final Cut. Any explanation for this?

We need to know how these files were created. (If they were simply captured in Vegas, they wouldn't be .mov.) What codec was used, and what software created them?

Just did this for delivery to a FCP-based post-production facility in LA.

Had to get our feature onto D-5, HDCam, Digibeta and Beta SP. Soution was to render out 8 reels, or files, of about 12-15 minutes apiece to Quicktime JPEG-2000 720P Files. Post house assembled in FCP and spit it out to D-5, dubbed to HDCam and down-converted the D-5 to the Beta and digibeta.

Worked great.

It was nice being able to stay in Vegas all the way to these last stages of post.

Although I should add that we converted to Cineform .mov before re-rendering to the JPEG-2000 files. This was a personal choice; honestly don't know if it was necessary.
