Capture Failing via firewire

I used to use Adobe Premiere but switched to Edius. I have a friend who still uses it and I sometimes try to help him out in a jam. Right now he's having problems capturing from dv via firewire. The video in the capture window sputters and cuts in and out and when u try to capture an error message comes up "capture failed". I replaced his firewire cable and took his camera and tested it with 2 other edit systems and its working fine. Hard drive is no where near full. I'm thinking either bad firewire card or his video display/graphics card. Anyone have any suggestions? Any settings we might be overlooking?

It's an old Pent. D 3.4 ghz PC with Asus MB. Everything has worked fine for 2 years with this config. No changes, just suddenly started giving problems.

THanks

The connector itself may be the culprit...I just gained full use of Onlocation through the use of a snug fitting interface 1394 cable/pc conector combo.
The word robust was not in the vocabulary of the person that designed the 4 pin 1394 plug.

Thats what I thought. But as i mentioned. The camera works via firewire with two other NLE's I tried it with.

The connector on the system that has the problem is where I would look. It's such a flimsy socket that one inadvertant cable yank to the side might deform it enough to prevent a solid coupling.
