Logo in the corner of the web address

I've noticed that a lot of sites (like DVXuser) have a little logo that comes up in the web address. Is that something I can add to my website?

Yes. Just make a 16x16 PNG version of your logo in Photoshop and then use the following website to turn it into an .ico file. Then change the name of the file to favicon.ico and upload it to your website's main web directory.

Or try this site. It might be able to take any file and make it into a favicon.ico .

Browsers will look for that file for bookmarks, etc. It might also help if you place the following code in the <head> section of your html.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://yoursite.com/favicon.ico" />

Good luck!

Look at that big-brained monk!

Sounds great, but I have some questions. I was thinking of 2 different possibilities. The first one was graphic and saved great, but I didn't like the way it looked. The second was a text-based logo. But when I tried to save that one as a png in PS, it wouldn't ive me that option. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Great thread! And my really cool logo turned into mush at 16x6 too. It seems like a lot of these little favicons have a ton of detail in them but I'm still struggling with getting that to work for me. Not sure what the png problem is that you're having either.

Try a google search for "favicon.ico". I guess you can make multiple logos of different sizes that are all stored in the ico file. Sorry I didn't save any links this morning and I'm out the door.

peace,

Hey Jim, you're probably in the wrong color mode. If you're using CMYK, then you won't have the option to save as a PNG file.

Ooooh Tommy, that was it!

When you say 16x16, do you mean pixels? Cause I can't even see it that small.

Oh, and don't worry, there will be lots more questions when I actually try to upload this.

Thanks

Yeah they mean pixels - you just have to zoom in ridiculously far and the simpler the graphic- the better.

Thanks Tom.

I think I have it nailed down. My first attempt was at 16x16 when I did the conversion, and it was unviewable. I tried again at 30x30, and it must automatically downscale it. Turned out better that way.

Here's how it turned out

Let me know what you think. I am going to try and come up with something better, but this will do for now.

BTW I think you can save it as a square png up to 46pixels x 46pixels. The browser will automatically resize. I had to play around with different iterations based on my logo to get one that looked good and was legible.

...cool. At least I know it's not me.

As always, thanks for all the help. DVXuser is the one-stop-shop for the obscure question.

Looks nice, Jim. :)

If you don't mind, can I give a quick suggestion for your website? Currently your site is all images. That's a common mistake with some designs and it really hurts search engine placement. You really should create a template that uses actual text that spiders (like google, Yahoo, etc.) can crawl and harvest. It should be fairly simple to recreated your site's design using all text. Give it a shot! Let me know if you need any help.
