Better Latitude than film

It's the real deal. Here they are in 1 stop increments. And since the file is 25M, I would hope it would have that much info. As a note, there are areas in the window seal that are too far gone, and will not show value under 255.

my only observation is the image you started with has more detail than the image started with in this thread, or maybe i just couldn't see it due to it's size in the original post?

interesting.

His first image was with no exposure adjustment. My first one is at -1. At 0, mine looked exactly like his.

The Fuji S5 and the Nikon D3 have wide DR (according to DP Review of the D3) and I have seen this kind of recovery in images before, so I guess I was not as surprised as some here.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD3/page20.asp

About the D3 DPR says . . . "As the example below shows the ability to pull back color information is impressive, and though you can't expect miracles these are some of the most pliable RAW files we've yet seen. It's not quite Fujifilm S5 Pro level, but with careful processing it's not far off."

The camera doesn't have 2 chips as was previously suggested, but its chip does have 2 dedicated sets of pixels on the one chip. One of which is specifically to capture the higher dynamic range.

Here is more detail on that from the Fuji site. http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/s/finepix_s5pro/features/index.html

While the D3 is awesome, it does not employ the same type of chip....so it still has the same ~ +/- 2 stop limitation that most other digital chips have. The article referenced above has some good examples of this.

I don't think anyone called him a liar, in fact we're all excited if this is the real deal, I know I am! I'm always screwing up my shots, I'd love to pull out the blown areas of my shots.

Relax.

It just seemed unbelievable. Calling someone a liar is a lot different than being skeptical.

you're totally lying about these photos! and the only way i will believe you is if you mail the camera to me and let me use it.

Holy crapola, that's frikkin cool. Ugs only has a p.o. box, send the camera to me.

Nikon better come up with something this latitudidly good or I'll really consider jumping ship. Pretty amazing.

The only down sides I see are huge file sizes.

I like that they basically use a D200 body so it would be compatible with all my other Nikon stuff. The biggest advantage I can see is the safety net of having your camera set incorrectly on a crucial shot for event photogs. Fuji does have some nice skin tones too.

All in all I think I would trade the latitude of an S5 for sharpness and low light quality of a full framed chip like a 5D. D3, or the soon to be released D700 (or whatever they call it).
