brevis versus m2: daylight scenes: questions

I own the Brevis. And while I love the look of it during nighttime shoots. I am not completely satisfied with the daylight stuff I have gotten. The footage seems to look like bare hvx200 hd footage.

I remember seeing andrew's brilliant film ILLEGAL. If i remember correctly it was shot with the m2 adaptor. And the daylight stuff was captivating. I realize he color corrected in post. But even his raw footage looked textured like film.

Someone suggested if i buy a different diffuser for my brevis it will give me the look i desire.

Any advice would be appreciated..

Hey Dude,

I know I already said this to ya but just for the community. The Redrock's diffuse is indeed thicker, it helps to diffuse the image to a degree that might seem pleasant no doubt. However, any of these adapters can accomplish a similar aesthetic when put to good use and understood.

I've seen day lit stuff from the Brevis with a Flip Unit (which you have) that looks just as nice even without color correction. You can still go the route I said about changing the diffuser out, but you can also try a mattebox and filters to help cut light and a few other things.

The diffuser's a good option, and such things listed above. Let me know what ya need help with. :B

I'll post some daylight footage with the cf3 later tonight. It looks great with aperture at about 3.0-3.5, unfotunately you start seeing grain at that point. at 2.0 and lower bokeh blooms too much. 2.8 is a good inbetween, very little if any grain and decent bokeh.

Right, Astigmatic. Same deal with the Extreme. Depending on the unit you can get to about 5.6 and if you avoid skies that's great. That's where the recommendation for a mattebox comes in.

As well, don't forget Internal NDs and the camera's iris are your friends in helping to control light.

Yeah, I believe the recommendation according to their site for CF3 is for 2.8 and faster. CF2 has more leeway in that department and I get the impression that it is a nice middle ground between the incredibly light efficient CF1 and the denser CF3...

Later,
Jason

I don't think I've ever seen any cf2 footage. It seems like few people take advantage of the swapable GGs. I'm curious to find what lies ahead of us in terms of new imaging elements. It seems like the possibilities could be endless. I for one really really like how the cf3 looks at f3.5-4 on my fd 50mm lens, if only there was a cinefuse gg that did not show GSE. Granted the cf1 can probably stop down to that, but the bokeh really doesn't change much until you stop way down and by that point you're getting GSE.

Okay, as promised.

This was just a cf3 test shoot, I wasn't trying to do anything cinematic so please forgive the handheld roughness.

That's correct...CF3 is a max diffusion option (meaning very shallow depth of field) and depending on background, you really should use lenses faster then f2.8 with it. CF2 or CF2Le have much more aperture range. When using CF3 or CF3Le, a little tip is to increase the MP.1's oscillation as much as possible using our image tuning guide, or page 11 of the printed manual. It's externally adjustable, and takes seconds to change...the internal microprocessor handles the rest :-)

I use cf2 all the time and have been more than happy with it. I've meaning to post comparisons for ages but I've just been too damn busy, but I promise I will make time this weekend.

Dennis could you please post a link to where I can download the instructions PDF? I can never remember if I should turn the screw clockwise etc to make the vibration faster.

So can you get an image close to that of cf3? Because the stock cf1 during day light looks like stock brevis. And do you have to change oscilattion on the cf2 like you do on the cf3?
