Trying to find the best MONITOR for around 2K

Hi Guys,

I've been shooting with the HVX/LEX for a while now and it's time to get a monitor. I'd like to get one in AU because the import TAX is OUCH! (appox. $300 for the LEX) Anyway looking around it seems the Marshall range might be the best bet. I'd love a panasonic but their around 4K.

Would either of these be suitable?

Also what are some standard accessories you'd recommend with one of these (eg. Noga arm?)

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ben

Look up the Carrion monitor. At $1530 It's the best value for the money IMO, although by the time you add in battery mount, batteries and support arm (don't use the Noga arm, it's not stiff enough for a monitor of this size) as well as import tax, it might run you slightly over 2k.

I've looked at the Carrion, it looks good but 2 Pana batteries alone to run it would cost me around $550 extra, & that's without a support arm. So add import TAX and i'm quite a bit over.

So does anyone have any feedback on the Marshall's. I've read some stuff on the forums but i'd like to know if it's decent value for 2K

If you can handle the plastic this might do.

Eh, I've use that one and would recommend it only if you can't afford anything else. The battery mount is horrible, there are two springs that connect and hold the battery in place, and every time you put on and off the battery it feels like you're going to snap off the spring. The component inputs aren't well built; one of the connectors on the one I use is loose and cause picture flickering. It consumes battery like crazy as well; an NP-970 (the biggest available Sony battery) will only last for a mere two hours. There's no blue gun for color calibration (in fact, there isn't much calibration option at all). Plastic is such a bad idea when you're in a rigorous production environment, the only good thing about it is that it's light. It's not a particularly sharp monitor either and the colors are away off. It is $800 and uses standard battery, so it's relatively cheap, but you do get what you pay for. For $2k you can afford so much better.

I still say the Carrion is your best value because it's leap and bound above the marshal for not that much more, but if you really can't stretch that far then the Marshall will work fine. It's been a workhorse monitor, known for being reliable. You're not getting a whole lot of value for your money, as it is obscenely expensive for what it offer, but since for the longest time there are no (relatively) affordable monitoring option around, the Marshall has acquired quite a following.

Thanks so much for the detailed response. I'll be staying right away from the Ikan, sounds like a bucket of SH!T...

Ben :)

That one is composite input only, so it's not going to be sharp enough. Plus you can forget about getting an underscan monitor for under $1k.

I think the IKAN might be a NO-GO! Based on what i've read. I might just have to look into the Marshall or the Carrion.

Ben,

I have been using the Marshall V-R70P-HDA for about two years with my HVX. It's a great monitor and serves the purpose of locking in a sharp focus (I use focus assist as well) and composition. I hang it on a Noga arm attached to my Zacuto setup. The Noga is plenty strong enough to hold the monitor in place. I plan to continue to use this monitor when I transition to the HPX500 or HPX2000 later this year.

Thanks for the info Jim. I'd really like to get a monitor in AU if i can. The Marshall you own sells for $2,195 here. I'll have to get a price on the Noga arm aswell.

Have you used your monitor while shooting with a 35mm adapter?

The Nebtek NEB70HD looks nice!

It's still overseas but i think i might go with it. I just read a bunch of reviews and it sounds like the best bang for buck monitor under the Pana.

Any thoughts?

Ben :)
