I just got a new rode NTG 2 and I'm getting a small amount of cracking from the mic when the subject is within about 2ft of the mic.

Any ideas?

Check whether all the batteries involved (mic, mixer etc) are fresh. I used to get that problem when my batteries in my mixer where about to die.

bad capsule , to much gain in preamp
take the battery out you dont need it
check without battery with your stereo ,
place the mic infront of the speaker , and increase the gain untill you will hear distortio
check the preamp on your camera input and lower it for 18 db
rize the voluim slowly and whatch the meters , if you hear cracks befor the camera hit 0 dbfs its probably you have bad mic

I thought using a battery was better than on board power? Anyway, having a battery in r out does not change the crackling i'm hearing, DAM, I needed to use this mic tomorrow,

dude, you have to start speaking english, can't understand your posts.

From my research, the NTG1 and 2 are identical in sounds quality, it just adds more options to have that battery powered option.

And it's only 80 bucks more, I think i fixed the problem now, think is was a gain issue on the camera.

dude , if you was reading my first post , you was fixing it without waist of cyberspace .
time to get some audio education or buy the dvd :-)
