the Cavision dual: RFF-15D

I think there's a new model of this called the RFF-1560G-D

The Cinetech: FFSL01 http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=FFSL01

or the petroff: Petroff mini, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/442119-REG/Petroff_MFF01_MFF01_Complete_Mini_Follow.html

The cavision looks pretty solid and is dual, howewver is it really in terms of performance and buid? Going in proce the cinetech has an uber amount of features, but the freshdv reviews says it's noisy and has a ton of slop.. is this true?

The petroff has been getting good reviews about its precision, but it's only single wheeled..very short on features.

Any advice would rock,

thanks!

hey thanks, hysonfilms.com says it's coming soon, so not yet available.

I was thinking about the redrock, it seems to be the best bang for the buck, but I was wondering if I should go up a few more dollars and gain some extra features, like dual focus wheels or betteer quality/precision.

oh by the way, why do you chose it over the chrosziel? Is it that much better, or it just a matter of whatever you grab first?

thanks

I dunno, from the website it seems as if he's on a hiatus or something. I saw pics of the FF though and it looks pretty rad.

well he is a one man band with two kids one of which is no more than a yr old or so so im pretty sure he is on r&r, but trust me his stuff is well worth holding out for if you can.

I was in the market for a follow focus as well, and was about to get the redrock, but found a great deal on a used chrosziel. Can't go wrong with either. For $645 the redrock is a really great value. The chrosziel is a solid piece of german mechanics, but at over $1600 retail, I don't think it's necessarily a $1000 dollars better...Not sure what type of lenses you plan on shooting with, a good dual ff tends to be pricey.

yeah maybe I should just have patience, but once the itch to buy something sets in I start obsessing and then I want it now! lol, I know the cinevate ff is around the corner but that's been around the corner since last year, I don't think I'll be waiting for it.

I just saw the new Zacuto ff on their website.

Is it me, or does that not look like a rebadged Petroff mini? The mount is slightly different but the knob are gearbox are the same..

Wow, those do look similar.. nice find.

Zacuto tightens from the bottom. I'd still put my money on them as their products just have a way of kicking ass. Though of the three you mention, I'd go Petroff. Cinetch uses belt drives and when I tested one, I found the play a bit too much for me. Also, under foul conditions I'd rather have a closed gear box than an open belt drive system. Cavision looks like a deal, but everything I used from Cvision so far has been cheaply made. Have yet to hear from any users yet.

My new RedRock has insane amounts of play, but evidently it's defective. Everyone else says theirs doesn't so I'll hold judgement until I get a replacement.

I started a thread with a video of it on this forum.

yeah that's why I'm hesitant about the rr. From pics if kinda looks plasticky and cheap but most reviews seem good, I just wondering what the tolerances are as well as how the gears wear over time.

That doesn't sound right. I ordered an upgraded gearbox from RRM soon after I bought my FF and it's fairly tight.

I don't think it's plasticky or cheap looking. I like the whips a lot (I got all three: 8", 12" and 18"), and the lens gears seem fine too. It fits perfectly on my Letus rails, and the adjustable/reversible features seem well thought out.

If the gear lash problem is solved, and I have pretty high confidence it will be, I'll be a very happy camper.

Theres about half a mm of play.... Infact theres less play than that fancy double wheeled arri I used a while ago...

so I got the petroff and it's pretty sweet. I like how you can move the gear from one side to the other, it's good for placing the focus unit on either side of your rig, perfect for left handers. It also has an adjustment screw for tightening up play, and whatever play there may be is quite insignificant. I would highly recommend this (or the zacuto if it is in fact a rebadge or updated version) as an alternative to the RR or SG with a few extra features for the increased cost.
