Affordable and Portable Green Screen suggestions

how big?

Some camera shops sell smallish 'hoop' screens of about 1.2m diameter, which are wonderfully portable (they can be folded up into about 40cm diameter in a few seconds) so long as you only need close-ups (or mostly do animation, like I do).

Anything larger, you'll probably need some kind of folding frame, and will have issues with folding/rolling up the greenscreen fabric etc, and of course transporting it. Some of the ones I've seen advertised look great but take 15 minutes to assemble and set up. Although I think I saw one like a portable roll-up film projection screen, about 3 metres wide - that would be very quick and easy to set up.

A stash of a few of those hoop screens can come in really handy. no matter what size 'main' screen you go for--i would definitely look at getting those to go along with it. But yea, we really need some more info on your circumstance/size before we can give any good suggestions.

I used a dozen neon green poster boards from a drug store for a shoot recently. Works perfect. I just put distance between the subject and the background so that it blurs enough to hide the edges where the poster overlays one another.

Im looking for a 8x8` framed style greenscreen. We are going to be doing several standup interviews....closeup shots (mid chest and up).

Ive been hearing the wrinkle issue is probably the most difficult to overcome.

I would think that the smaller hoop style screens would be enough for a medium shot as you're describing. There is absolutely no reason to worry about covering the entire frame, so long as your interviewee is in front of the screen, the rest is inconsequential, because it can just be garbage matted out (and should be anyway)

The bonus with this is that you would probably have a much easier time lighting your screen, could throw it up on a single c-stand, and it will be a lot more portable, meaning less set up and tear down time -- time is money. ;)

what about chromatte? not as affordable as traditional greenscreen but takes away problems with wrinkles or spill and you don't have do do any BG lighting. perfect for run-n-gun interviews. plus you can switch between blue and green in case someone is wearing a bad color....

there is a portable pop open model called chromaflex

These are nice: http://www.eefx.com/

Foam-backed, so no wrinkles. Come in a variety of sizes and you can get one or more edges sewn to make hanging easier...

If you are going to invest in a portable green screen, get one that can be used for larger scenes too. If you get something small and that's all you have you will be sorry. The medium sized greenscreens are not that expensive and if you get two screen holding lightweight tripods and an adjustable cross bar, with a load of cheapo Harbor Freight tool plastic clamps, you can pull that screen tight on the bars of the tripods to make it completely wrinkle free.

Here is Troy (Impossible Race) Ruff of Ruff Productions in front of a green screen on the stands like I stated above.

Light well and then shoot... Then pull it down, fold it up and 'Be off wi' ya Laddie!' :engel017:
