How to aggressively warm up/cool down an image without turning it monochrome?

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this dilemma. Any quick and dirty secrets on how to yellow up an image without turning everything else yellow as well? Skin tones seem to fade into everything else, and blue objects lose their blue, etc.

I think maybe you should post a picture of the effect you are trying to achieve.. by saying "yellow up and image without turning everything else yellow" doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

About the skin tone thing, when you just turn the yellow up on an image, or any color for that matter, things like that will happen. You also have to take into account contrast, curves, etc.

But again, see if you can find an image with a similar effect, it may be easier for us to understand exactly what effect you are going for.

Oops sorry, I meant to yellow up an image without affecting certain parts of an image.

Kind of like the "Sin City" look? There are some great After Effects tutorials on how to do that sort of thing on the web, I can't tell you exactly how to off hand, because I've never tried that technique, I'm assuming you'd have to create a garbage mask around the parts that you don't want affected, not 100% sure though. I skimmed through a video tutorial about it on creativecow.net and it seemed pretty good. Not sure if that's exactly what you mean, but it should give you an idea if you're looking for something along those lines...

This may not be the effect your are looking for, but here is another option: Using a multi-band color corrector, like FCP's 3-way or Color...etc, you can adjust just the highlights to be 'yellow' or 'blue' and drag the shadows and mids in the opposite direction (blue/cyan and yellow/orange, respectively).

Adding the opposite color in different luminosity levels will keep the image from becoming color-washed and becoming garishly mono-chrome.

Another option: you can also add a Yellow or Blue tint to certain areas of the frame in post, like a graduated sky filter.
