Can the Digi002 be more than it is supposed to be?

I've had Pro Tools and a Digi002 control deck for a couple years now, and I mostly use them for digital music composition and final mixes for videos. Will the deck work with any software other than Pro Tools? Can it be utilized in anything like FCP or Soundtrack Pro? I know it can't work with any Adobe tools. If not, can someone recommend a good controller that will work with FCStudio tools? Thanks.

It should work with Sound Track Pro just fine and I believe it works with Peak and Logic and Garage Band and several other software apps as well. I believe there's a list on the digidesign site of what it will work with.

Okay...great! Thanks guys. Now...one more fun question. There are two firewire ports on the back of the D002 unit...can I have those connected simultaneously...one with a Mac and one with a PC? (not working on both at the same time...but just so I don't have to swap cables all the time) If not...not a big deal...I'm just curious. Thanks for the help...can't WAIT to get started with my new Mac!:)

It will also work with MOTU's Digital Performer and AudioDesk (Mac only).

I wouldn't recommend connecting the firewire ports to two computers. They carry power, which could get very hairy, possibly damaging some or all of the gear. The two ports are probably intended for daisy-chaining with external hard drives.

Yes, the firewire ports on the 002/003 are for daisy chaining. They should not be plugged into two computers at once.

Do they make an A/B switch for firewire? Maybe you could do that to switch between the two, if they make one. OR (I like this idea) make a firewire patchbay! Neutrik makes pannel mount firewire jacks. Middle Atlantic makes a single rack space punch-out mounting bracket for Neutrik jacks. You could get one of those pannels (about $20 u.s.) 4 of those panel mount firewire pass-throughs (should be less than $5 each, shop around though) and make a patch bay. The Middle Atlantic panels have 16 spaces on them, so you could expand it later, or use it for other projects in the future.

You'd be the envy of all your friends and they would ask you to make one for them and you'd charge them money to do it! There you go, another source of income.

Sorry, kinda got on a roll there, but it's not a bad idea.

Unless I'm mistaken, the 002/003 will worl as an AUDIO INTERFACE with non-ProTools software, but will not work as a control surface.

It depends. The 002/003 has different operating modes. It will work as a MIDI control surface and in "standalone mode". I think if you play around with it, or maybe ask around on GearSlutz.com, you can find the answer.

Unfortunatly, I own a 003 rack, not the one with the control surface, so I don't know for sure.

I took a quick look at Digi's info, and it appears that the 003/mixer can be updated to work with third-party midi software front ends (as a controller), but the 002/mixer can't.

To my surprise, both communicate exclusively with PT via Firewire, not midi. The 003 has a patch that will allow it to work with standard midi commands, probably HUI-based, but I'm not sure. It's also possible that there are third-party patches that would allow Logic or DP or whatever to work with the 002 controller via Firewire.

Digi's site has evrything it has ever made documented in complete detail, so I'd go there first.

The suggestion to visit Gearslutz.com for more info is a good one too. You might also try Unicornation.com for MOTU-related solutions.

So, to sum up... the 002 will work with other software (via Core Audio) as an audio interface only; the 003 can be used as an interface AND control surface (via midi mode)...
