Blue Screen Or Green Screen Help Anyone?

I want to learn how to key, not sure if I should get a blue or green screen or if there is something better I'd love to know. Also, if you know what type of material, etc... any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I bought a 10' X 20' muslin greenscreen from this site and made ot great. They have lots of other products and info.. Some people say rent but it's good quality and it paid for itself immediately.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago when one of my clients asked me to shoot a greenscreen music vide. I bought the screen from Tubetape.com with the stand and I had just gotten CS3. So i googled how to light greenscreen, went to videocopilot.net and learned the tutorial step by step on how to use Keylight with Aftereffects. Now it is very easy for me to cut really good keys. I am still learning but my clients loved it and that's what puts diapers on my babies butt cheeks.

I think blue and green key equally well. I read somewhere that some people feel that a green screen works better with people with dark complexion and blue for a light complexion. However, for me a more important aspect is that I find that few people show up to a shoot wearing a shade of green that could cause keying problems and you are more likely to have someone wear a problem blue.

Once you decide on color, keep the subject and green screen well separated (10' generally works well) and the screen as evenly lit as possible. As someone else mentioned, if you do a search you should find complete instructions and tips.

Umm, the DVX has 5-1 compression (4-1-1) Pulling a good key is a pain. Try to rent a camera that can record 4-2-2 or at least has Composite, SDI or HDSDI out at 4-2-2

Green is generally considered to be the best of the 2 colors for keying with video based on how the imaging chips work with specific colors.

Avoid muslin or paper if possible. Look for the special foam-backed fabric like this, if you can afford it. This place sells custom sizes as well as standard sizes and their screens have a black opaque backing so these can be used outdoors (unlike EEFX):

Otherwise, it's really not rocket science. Any saturated green or blue color, evenly lit at the right distance and brightness level will allow for a good key as long as you (also) minimize noise and learn how to work the keyer settings in post.

The screens from EEFX.com are pretty good, ive got one and its great.

Also there is a really nice plugin for final cut pro and motion that makes pulling good keys really really easy. Its called DVmattePro and costs about 200 dollars, worth every penny when you can get keys like this: (im aware the background dosnt fit at all with the keyed image, I just had it in the timeline and stuck it underneath to see how well it worked)

What it really boils down to is what you're shooting. If your actors have wardrobe with green in it, use a bluescreen and vice versa. Also note that if your actors have bright blue eyes that's something to consider.

As long as your screen is well and consistently lit you should have no problems pulling a key from either a blue or a green screen.

Good luck!

much of it has to do with what the subject is but typically, I look at hair color, for me, it's easier to key out blue with blonds and green with brunettes and red-heads. Now I have limited space to work with so if I could have the subjects further up from the back, that would help with the bleed problems I may have but till then, that's how I decide.

We use all greenscreens at Hyperactive. Oodles of greenscreens.

When you get your screens get good tripod rigs and crossbars for hanging them. Get loads of cheapo Harbor Freight Tool plastic clamps to join large greenscreen walls seamlessly together and pull each set tight. Have one really huge greenscreen for rolling under the action on the studio floor that rolls up and behind the action. Light the greenscreen really well.

Look at the first tests in PUSH thread with the RED Camera and see how smooth a greenscreened shot can be. (It is of Troy Ruff... "Impossible Race") Woooo Hoooo! :engel017:
