Gears for Rent? (Brevis + A1)

What gears and FF would people recommend for shooting with the Brevis and A1?

Redrock Micro gears have gotten good reviews. But would they work with a rented FF and rails, or only with the microFollowFocus system?

And would anyone in the NYC area be interested in renting their gears? I'm directing a narrative short at the end of May.

Which follow focus are you renting? To be safe why not just get the gear rings of the follow focus system you are using on the shoot?

Currently we're not planning to rent a FF at all. Just pulling focus directly on the lens. My DP and AC both said it's doable, but I'm still trying to investigate using a real FF.

But my understanding was that regular FF gears wouldn't work with 35mm photo lenses; don't regular FF systems simply mesh with gears built directly onto the barrel of cinema lenses? The trouble is 35mm photo lenses don't have gears built in, hence the need for those RedRock gears. Is this right?

Weather your using a cooke lens with built in gear teeth or an SLR with a gear ring, the pitch is still 0.8mod (oir 32pitch) its the standard cine pitch, so any follow focus will work with any ring, as long as they are 0.8mod.

Thanks Hoarp. So the question remains which GEARS should I consider? Are the RedRock gears coupled with any FF a reliable way to pull focus with a Brevis?

And any possible GEARS rentals out there in NYC?

You may want to check the Marketplace section for rentals. As hoarp001 said, all gears should be .08. As long as they have that standard pitch then they should work.

If you're planning on buying a follow focus, then gears are relatively cheap so that it make sense to buy them and equip all your lenses with them. I use the Redrock and they work very well. The ring diameter is nice and thick so that I can pull focus directly from the lens if I choose. But I would never recommend pulling focus directly on the lens; it's impossible to see the focus marking.
