I have a project that is about 20gb in size. Once I compress it for dvd burning what size will it be? Will I be able to burn it to a single dvd?

Depends more on length of program, than on the master's size. 20GB in 1080i DVCPROHD is short, like 20 minutes! 20GB in DV is about 1.5 hours. With compressor, you can taylor the settings for higher quality (larger file sizes) or lower quality (smaller files size).

1.5 hours of DV can be compressed into a SD-DVD using the 120minute preset with nice results (roughly 4GB size). 20 minutes of HD copressed into a SD-DVD using the 90minute preset (or adjusting the bitrate to about 7.7 max) will result with nice results (roughly 1.5GB in size).

What ever you do, leave 'bitrate' room on the DVD for title card, graphics and audio. Also, increaseing the bitrate about 7.4-7.7 will not result in better quality, only discs that are unreadable.

If you are taking about BLU-RAY, than that is another story...for another post.

P.S. the answer is YES, it will most likely fit on one DVD. But without more information it is hard to give you an exact answer. (like if you were talking about 20GB of MPEG-1, transcoded to Mpeg-2, that would probably fit on 6 or more SD-DVDs)

Pretty much anything can be comrpessed down far enough to fit on your disc. You can choose bitrates of mpeg 2 as low as 1 megabit per second!

Of course it won't look good.

Most Hollywood Movies are encoded at about 5-7 Megabits per second average with a peak of 9ish. They get about 2 hours of content on a disc that way on a single layer.

"Estimated file size:"

This is in the inspector for Compressor. Load your clip, load your setting preset, click on it, then check the inspector. Keep in mind that it is ESTIMATED. YMMV
