Not very good at this, but identified that there was some CA on the left of the 35-135 and I thought that the 28-85 was a bit soft, anyone have a Dounut type focusing issue where there is a ring thats in focus but the center and edges are soft, just noticed it a couple of times, also using the 2x extender on the Fiji is really good for getting rid of vingnetting on these slower lenses,

any thoughts or comments would rock

Here is the rig the lenses are on:

I'm surprised you can even get the sharpness you are getting with a 2/3" video camera. What lens is that on you HPX502 and what f stop are you using on the HPX?

Neither the Brevis nor any other adapter is designed to mount in front of a 2/3" camera without a relay that replaces the video lens. You should have lots of aberration in the corners.

You really should blow up a full size copy of a rez chart to 4 feet or so and photograph that corner to corner to really see what your getting. If you want a jpg of the file email me at
NSLL@pacbell.net.

If you can get decent results tell us what you're doing please.

That looks pretty good considering the 17x Fujinon lens is out front. I'm impressed also that you rigged this thing up as I know it's a missile launcher looking rig right now. The good news is that once our 2/3" is complete, you'll be able to remove the Fujinon and attach the Brevis flip directly. We're very excited about this project :-)

Its the Fiji 17x7.6x2 at about 5.6 or slightly higher, this is exciting would we call these results acceptable?, or do we need to see them in a real world situation?, Im excited about the rely to and thanks for being so around these fourms Dennis, Do you know if the Fuji has a sweet spot im going to try some stater rings later this week?, using the extenter sometimes reduces the vignetting, if I said i wanted to use this on a short in two weeks am I dreaming or would this be useable?

I may get myself in trouble here, but that lens is not something we're too happy with here. It breathes like an Olympic sprinter at the finish line. You'll find a few shooters over at the Cinevate forum shooting with the HPX500 just like you are. They are happy with the results, but certainly not the size of the rig! Our new Proteus rails are designed to support this camera, likely the first support rails that work on everything from the HV20 to the HPX500 using the Brevis in flip, or non-flip modes.

Our studio should be finished renovations on Sunday so we're looking forward to doing some more testing there, particularly a 4 cam mini-shootout between the HV20, XH-A1, EX1, and HPX500. There should be a ton of data coming forth on the HPX with the 17x lens, as that's what we have here. My guess is that f5.6 is good. The 2x extender however looks pretty soft on our DSC back focus charts.

Im getting an A0 size chart this afternoon and will be testing again this evening,

Just the claifiy here:

Are you saying that the results are not typical the zooms i could see a bit of CA but are you say that its acceptable or much less than normal am i onton something or will we not know until I use the big chart.

Sorry about all the questions trying to ready this for a short film :)

You won't know until you do a test on a full chart about 4' wide that fills the whole frame corner to corner.
You should test it at all f-stops on the HPX to see what it takes to get the corners sharp or close to it.
Then you can decide what's acceptable to you.

For my work I need good corner sharpness at low f stops for interior lighting, and that was impossible in my tests on a 2/3" camera. But other people have different needs. If you're outside you can get very high f-stops that cover up a lot of optical problems. Maybe you will like the look of soft corners - seriously. If you are shooting a short with interiors though and want it to look "normal" and sharp, but with low DOF and a filmic feel, I think it probably won't work.

Who knows though - test away.

we have a winner and F8 it is, I know its high but you should see the difference between F5.6 and F8:Here are the RES test for all the other Lenses, (All F8 Aceept Maybe the 135 cant rember):
Here are some real world DOF shots:Setup was as Follows,

HPX502 1080i/25p Clean Scene File, Fiji 17x7.6 NO extender Flip Acromat Flip Unit Brevis GG Nikon Mount Lens, (NO stater rings they just didn't make it better I couldn't get the fiji to focus on the GG with even one ring I tryed up to three)

ResChart was on an A1 Sheet which is 594mm × 841mm not idea but all I had for this test hope its ok

f8 is what I figured it would be. Same as on an EX-1 .

Good luck if that works for you. Should be fine outdoors in most situations but indoors.....

Do you mean Fuji or Fiji lens?
- Lenny

Sorry i meant Fujinon (is there a diffence? school me im nieve)

Backfocus does need done on the HPX to Fujinon haven't done it in ages,

as for the brevis, set SLR lens to highest F stop, turn glass off and focus up with the Fujinon am i missing something?

The Brevis back-focus procedure sounds correct. Just confirm with an image focussed up that it's correct by tweaking the 35mm lens focus, and then the HPX500 focus (on the Fuji lens) using an HD monitor if you can. This is something I typically do when shooting now, with the unit running and using focus assist on whatever camera we're shooting with.

sorry to be a pain Dennis can you clairy what you mean? im using onlocation so no probs for and HD monitor, also haven't trouble with aliment at times, what set screws should i be using or is it a combination of all read the manuel and watch videos but not too specific

On the Rev2, oscillation adjustment is internal, on the MP.1 it's an external port at the rear. In our paper manual the process is covered on page 11, and via the web, the same process covered in our oscillation tuning video downloadable from our owner's section.

When you're experimenting, I'd say connect directly to an HD panel (we use a 42" 1080P) via component. OnLocation is good, but at 720p we find the HD monitor (particularly on panels without native HD resolution at 1:1) limiting.
