REDBELT..Mamet's movie

I saw a preview a few weeks ago, and was in a Q&A with Mamet. It's getting much better reviews than it deserves. I thought it was pretty bad.

But you were good Kimko. :)

Dragon showed us the Japanese Magician's Mask he made for the movie today at Renegade Effects.

This movie looks so awful.

"There will be a fight. The fight will be fixed. We control the fight. Here's how it works. Three fighters will choose a rock. The first fighter to pick the red rock loses. The other two fighters will fight. The loser fights the fighter with the red rock. After that, the two remaining fighters who haven't fought yet will fight each other. The winner is the loser. Then four new rocks will be handed out. Two of these rocks will be green, one blue, and one yellow..."

I mean are they serious?

yeah right! i left after the first day as an extra(i was suppose to work 3 days).... but DM gave me my own room in the trailer "first time an extra got his own trailer" he had other obligations to other people(actors and jiujitsu martial artist.) yeah the ending could have been done better...and i didn't like the handicap thing which would never happen with the fight commission. but man i learned a lot watching Mamet work. there were flaws in a lot of the story i thought which i had brought up to his attention when he asked me about the script, like the gun being placed down on the wall and when she comes in and accidently grabs the gun and it fires? first off he as a police officer would not place his pistol there and...and without the safety on!!!! now when she walks in or anybody for that matter ..the police officer would grab his gun before taking her coat off! and the japanese fighter would not have given the belt to him without a match(fight) and the brazilian master played by philippino master guro Dan Inosanto most certainly wouldn't give it to a non family member nevermind a non brazilian...(if anyone knows Brazilians you know what i mean)soo DM listened then there was a silence, ooops i hope i didn't over step my boundries. he said he'd keep it in mind... oh well.....we're still friends at least.

I think Mamet's done some great stuff, but I also think he is pretty hit or miss. The last movie he did that I really liked was Spartan, although I still haven't found a good reason for why.

That's funny Kimko, Mamet isn't used to being told the truth so bluntly. You pointed to a number of issues that made the film bad. It was a question of logic, and the behavior of the brazilian master didn't seem authentic. It was just a lot to swallow. I don't think Mamet has the same control over screenwriting/directing as he does with his theatrical writing. It just seemed like lazy filmmaking, but Chiwetel Ejiofor is good, just a shame that his acting was wasted on a poorly written script.

i think he was rushed to do this project....he was so busy the past three years writing and directing: The Unit, his play, this project, his book, lawd knows what else! actually he has a lot of control over his projects as in creativity, as for the budget, well that's a different matter. everyone took a cut in pay and another reason i couldn't get on as an actor or stuntman. everyone likes this man and anyone who's an actor would love to do his projects. i myself would die to be in his plays more than his films, just to be part of a Mamet play is like being a part of history in the making.
