Sold it! My screenplay--finalized deal this week!

Thanks, Kyle. I admire your willingness to help others. I guess that goes for a lot of people on this forum...

Randomish question: How do you guys read scripts, on your computer or do you print them out? I get tired of reading long works on my comp and I like to underline and make notes. But, man, thinking about printing out so many scripts...That's a lot of paper and a lot of ink. Maybe I should get one of those Kindle e-book readers.

I print them out because I need to feel the diminishing thickness in my hands.

Great idea--the Kindle. Take it with anywhere, develop your craft.

HEY EVERYONE--read back one page to get a zip file download: 157 AWARD-WINNING & OTHER NOTABLE SCRIPTS...

In tribute to Kyle I just posted a blog called "Screenwriting da Chicago Way" at screenwritingfromiowa.wordpress.com to show the kind of talent that Illinois has produced. This should give some inspiration to all those writers outside L.A. (and those in L.A. who feel off the grid) and show this kind of thing does happen. I also plug the DVXuser forum.

And if you haven't downloaded Kyle's screenwriting doc that thing is a goldmine of info.

The zip file contains 157 AWARD WINNING & OTHER NOTEWORTHY SCRIPTS.

It will get you off and running quickly with your screenplay collection.

Add to it any other scripts you like.

Kyle, thanks for that file and for the motivation! Great selection of scripts. I haven't read nearly enough in my lifetime... I read A Few Good Men last night and started A Good Year. Going to try to take up your challenge and finish all of them in the next few months...

Brian--

Yes, it's THE STAR WARS, George's first rewrite of The Journal of the Whills, from May 1973 (as opposed to the later STAR WARS which made it to the silver screen). At the same time, he was also working on The Adventures of Indiana Smith (yes, this is the original title). I assumed, incorrectly, that most people had familiarity with the early Star Wars progression, before 1000 changes were made. But, then again, I'm a geek.

Never did the contest thing. Years ago, during a lunch break at a Beyond Structure seminar, several people were bashing the whole idea so I never pursued it.

Kyle, thanks very much for all your replies, support, resources, and your time!

Will you be reading the script fest entries?

And, to make it interesting, let's pose a challenge to our screenwriting family here at DVXuser... let's see who can read all 157 screenplays (fully focused reads, not just quick scans--or else you won't benefit from the experience) within the next 4-6 months. Or maybe just read 100. Once you've successfully completed the task, post your accomplishment on this thread. You'll be part of an elite group (Century Club).

That's a great idea! I'm on it like a wet bikini on a supermodel! I know this comes late but I just read through the thread. . . very encouraging to see or hear about someone making it. I downloaded your scriptwriting outline and I like what I see, very well put together.

Thanks for sharing and good luck with your future projects!

really enjoyed reading everything you posted ...it's cool that you write a 13 page treatment. A writer friend of mine writes that way as well and has talked about Lucas doing that...He actually explained it as since hes a fan of Lucas he understood a 13 page treatment being quite reasonable.

He said that when hes doing a treatment he will try and keep it to 13 pages cuz thats how he feels it should be, that his story can be broken down coherently and concisely into 13 pages. Its just a way that helps him write treatments more or less, keeps him organized.

I personally think learning from ppl like the greats such a s lucas and others, helps a writer gain there own style by taking what you like about them and making it your own....anyways that post with the guy going off on some rant about money and happiness and then telling you to take a hint at the end of his post was really insincere and I kinda thought I felt a hint of jealously in his words. Despite that dribble the rest of the posts were really interesting to read. Your clear way of explaining your writing process is really appreciated.

Congrats to you.

Hey Kyle, congrats man that's such great news! Keep us updated, and thanks for those files great tools for any aspiring screenwriter can never not read enough screenplays and structure/story things. Great thread!

thats awesome man. how did you get your foot on the door by the way? was it through a screenwriting competition or an agent? it was very generous of you giving us the screenwriting manual.

I believe that question has been answered already. Kyle talked about how it all happened earlier in the thread, I think starting at Page 3. A page or two back he said he doesn't do competitions.

thanks man. this topic has over 18 pages of insightful information, must have skipped it.

Just joined the thread. Congrats on the screenplay sale! I was just planning to start reading a bunch of screenplays over the summer to improve my writing. It is perfect timing that this compilation was put up, now I have something to read. I will take you up on the challenge on my quest to become a member of The Century Club.
