shot in 59.97, 23.97 timeline

if you shot with a vid rate of 59.97, and you pull it into a 23.97 timeline, wondering what that does technically to the 59.97 footage and then how it will look played back..?

shot 720 24p on Varicam, (80% 24p & 20% 60p) but when we got the QT files back from the Post House that did our conversion from the tapes, all the files in FCP show a video frame rate of 59.97. ALL of them. But some of footy looks different than others, which would make sense, because some should be 24 and some 60. But all being labeled the same, it is confusing. Some look 24p, the others absolutely look 60p.

Has anyone had experience with footage not being labeled correctly?
Is is the place that did the transfer?
Or maybe FCP?

Our DP assured us 80% WAS shot in 24p sync sound. He even checked playback a couple times.

I am not completely sure about this, but thought I would give it a shot.

As far as I am aware, the Varicam shoots 24p over 60p on to DVCPROHD tapes. When the conversion house ingested the footage, the 24p stuff was brought in with the pull-down included, so the 24p stuff looks 24 fps, but plays at 59.97 (60p).

that would seem to be a pretty good answer because that's what's going on here.... it looks 24p but it's clearly labeled 59.97 vid rate in the browser-

let me ask you another question- footage we know was shot at 60, when i pull that into a 23.98 timeline, it looks 24p. that doesn't make sense, right? shouldn't 60 footage going into a 23.98 timeline be ultra slo-mo?

well if its anything like the dvx all the footage is shot at 60i its just that certain frames are flagged by the camera to make it either 60i 30p or 24p.

the way you get super slow mo from the 60i is if you put it in the 23.98 and slowed it down to 40%.

so again if its anything like shooting on a dvx and the pulldown was left intact with the 24p footage then you can just use a 29.97 timeline and keep the pulldown intact with the 24p footage and still use the 60i on the 29.97 as well and the footage should have their "looks".

if it's like the dvx or even hvx and shot at 24pa, then you can do "remove advanced pulldown" from the tools menu. if it was shot standard 24p over a 60i signal, you can remove the pulldown using cinema tools. it's called "reverse telecine". once one of these processes are performed you will be left with a 23.98 progressive clip (24p).

if you are mixing your 24p footage with 60i footage your best bet may be to just edit in 60i. leaving the pulldown in your 24p footage still looks like 24p. however, trying to playback footage that was shot at 60i on a 23.98 timeline will alter the look drastically.

also, if you have footage that you shot at 60fps that you want to slow down, dropping on a 23.98 timeline and slowing to 40% is the wrong way to do it. this will have fcp creating fake intermediate frames while throwing out frames you actually shot. the result = crap.

instead, take the clip to be slowed down into cinema tools and conform to 23.98. this simply "re-tags" the clip as 23.98 while retaining all the frames you shot. then drop the conformed clip onto a 23.98 timeline and watch it play in perfect glass smooth slow mo. no speed change required. the result = not crap.
