Not only that, Fallon may actually be pretty good. I've listened to him speak many times when not performing, and he is a smart guy, and is more witty than most give him credit for. I think in a non-scripted talk show atmosphere he will surprise people.
It could have been worse, it could have been Chris Kattan.
I used to like Letterman back when he was fresh and new, but his act has gotten old and stale to me. But, it's not just him, I don't watch any of the late night shows anymore.
Why is Leno leaving late night? Is it his decision or NBC? I thought he was ahead in the ratings.
Regarding Fallon, you never know. I thought Jimmy Kimmel would tank but he's been on there for a while now. The late late night spot always needs someone younger and "hip" so Fallon may work well there.
Hmm... while I'm deeply intrigued about all of this... it will be interesting to see if that intrigue lasts.
I thought Kimmel would be an interesting phenomenon to follow... how he was able to go from The Man Show... to his OWN show... but it turned out I was wrong... I would need riddlin for that show to keep my attention.
I'm with the Cap'n... late night TV has really fallen off the map for me. It takes a special guest like Richard Simmons for me to make a point to even watch Dave anymore.
For me... Leno is nigh unwatchable... and Conan's time-slot is better suited to catching up on Tivo.
I just hope that Conan keeps a lot of the same elements. His show still makes me laugh. Cactus chef playing the flute....Genuis. I will give Fallon a chance.
I'm with Matt and Capt Quirk. There isnt much on late nights that I'll watch. Right now I DVR Letterman in case anything cool happens so I can watch it the next day. The two latest episodes are always available there for me, but I havent watched one in at least several weeks. Leno and the rest just bore the crap out of me. Conan can be funny at times, but I'd rather be watching The Daily Show or Colbert... Put those two back to back on a network and you'd have some ratings.
Colbert does it for me big time... Stewart has lost me... I like my show hosts dry, like a martini, but neither shaken nor stirred.
Honestly I think Conan will smoke Leno... I may start watching The Tonight Show again. While Conan isn't exactly dry... he is unpredictable... and wacky.
Vanilla is the most popular flavor... so hopefully bland society will accept him.
I wish Conan stayed in NYC, hopefully the time slot and location move won't water down his show too much. I can't stand Leno, there's no comedy involved in his show. I feel like I'm watching E! or something, it's just schmoozing with the stars. He's always trying to be real buddy buddy with everyone on his show. Letterman on the other hand is amazing, he never shys away from self-deprecating humor, odd and pointless segments which usually are hilarious, and he's A-OK with awkward situations. I also like his attitude like the show isn't a big deal and he's not worried about every guest liking him (for reference see his interview with Paris Hilton, instant hilarity). Don't even get me started on Craig Ferguson, how that guy is even on tv boggles my mind. Not only is he not the slightest bit funny he's incredibly annoying. His comic routine goes something like: introduce topic/joke, make funny face to audience, try to start back up again, make funny face to audience,"no but really", make funny face, laugh, finish joke, make funny face. I can't believe first grade humor can get you a late night show.
Fallon hosted Letterman once and was horrible, did an embarrassing impression of Dave all night...I personally never found Leno or Dave all that funny. Dave has his moments, and he was at his best on NBC when Larry Bud Melman was there. Stewart and Colbert is the funniest hour on TV right now. Stewart is sometimes inconsistent but he's backed up by John Oliver, John Hodgman, Ron Wriggle, Samantha Bee, Lewis Black, etc.
