Compared to something anyone could make with Home Depot parts. I'll just never understand why things like this are so expensive.

You have got to be kidding me.

I mean, you really are, right?

The RED ROCK mattebox should easily be priced at 2499.99. The closest I've seen in quality (first hand) is an Arri mattebox, man. It's build quality, options, finish and LOOK are completely professional. It feels sturdy, it looks sturdy, it is sturdy.

900.00 for an entire package and you guys are calling it a ripoff?

Sad.

expect that mattebox sometime in the year 2050, its been prolonged forever

The Mattebox is already ready to ship. Taking care of reservation holders (Golden Ticket First 50's), then the secondary reservation holders, then the general public.

If you didn't reserve, tsk tsk. Can't wait to get mines.

I just cant wait to read some reviews on this. Looks like the fit and finish are top notch though. another thing you wont get from home depot parts... heck i dont even think that highly of the screws at home depot. now maybe with parts from mcmaster carr and small cnc setup you could recreate this... but factoring in time spent you'd be paying alot more.

must add that I'll be getting one of these soon assuming everyone doesnt hate it. Kholi, are you on the reserve list? Please let us know what you think when you receive yours.

I'm on the reserve list, yes. But, I've already had a chance to play with the Mattebox in person. Just last week before Brian traveled to NAB.

I'm telling you, it's a done deal. There's nothing DIY about the RR Mattebox. Every single piece fits, the stages rotate as smooth as butter and lock like prison bars. You have an axis adjustment that lets you move the mattebox up and down (perfect for 35mm Adapter owners as you'd expect) and the arm is solid, offered in 15mm AND 19mm industry standard specs.

The weight is excellent, the flags themselevs are very sturdy and I was happy to see that the RR team took SPECIAL care in the knobs and bolts on this thing. One thing that I saw occurring constantly with matteboxes had been the top flag holder becoming stripped or non-functional. I can't see this happening with the RR unless you really just abuse the thing.

I wanted the RED ONE package cause it's bling but I think in the end I'll have an all black one.

At 899.99, Luis is right: it's a steal. This isn't a cheap rebadged imitation, the time they spent working on this thing was well worth it for them AND the consumer. How else would they have brought the full package in under 1000.00?

anything close to it is double or triple the amount.

That all sounds fantastic Kholi. I wasnt aware you had gotten a good feel for it already. This is the one then it sounds like when mattebox time comes around for me. Thanks!

To be fair - one guy is calling it a ripoff.
Personally I think it's a steal.
Okay, that's clever wordplay, but Luis, you haven't seen the product. I have. And frankly, I think it's ridiculous -- that they aren't charging at least $1200 for this.

For $595, this thing is crazy good. I went through mattebox hell, buying a CAVision (hah!) and a Chrosziel (are you frickin' kidding me? This is the most overpriced, overrated piece of equipment on the market) before settling in on a Vocas. A $1200 Vocas.

This Redrock is half the price. And it's swing-away! And it supports 4x5.65 filters, as well as full 6x6's.

I'm gonna get some time with it to do a review soon, but my initial impression is that they've got an out-of-the-park home run here, based on the price. If it was $4,000 (like a competitive Arri) then maybe I'd gripe about a few things, but at $600 or whatever, it's nuts. Why buy anything else?

I think you completely misunderstood me.
If it was clever wordplay it was really unintentional.

I think this thing looks phenomenal for the price.
Never meant to insinuate otherwise.

I hung around the Redrock booth today and yesterday. I love Brian and Andrew and the entire crew at RRM. I can say that the microMattebox is stellar, more than stellar. ARRI, Bogen, ESPN, Antique Road Show, and a slew of other big timers where checking out the new gear. The shouldermount is solid. A cool new thing about the shouldermount is that it mounts straight to Manfrotto heads. It slides right into the plate and all. The grips are "squishy" and adjustable. The cool thing about everything in their booth is that the production releases are going to be even MORE SOLID!

Louis's Carrion was on display at the booth also.

Feel free to ask any questions. After two days with Redrock at the booth, I think I can answer lots of the questions on the mattebox, shouldermount, microX, etc.
