Best shotgun for $650~

to camera - 2 lectros or zaxcom not to loose to much qoality , otherwise use the cable - much cheaper and better :-)
about mbho - its hyper cardioid to replace your oktava , not shotgun for extiriors
aanother good thing about mb- you can add swivel joint to make the mic sitting paralel to your boom and the head looks down what make it very short and exellent for low cellings and door paseges or hiding behind the visor in the car over the actor
. very versatil mic and plesent sound that you alwais can complete with cardioid capsule or fig of 8 in the feature foor ms recordings
very good bang for the buck

So I would need one transmitter for now to use with the boom. Is there a particular lectro/zaxom that is also a good deal used? And where should I look?

Thank you so much Oleg, you are totally helping me out, but I don't think I understand completely. I know your have much higher standards than what I have to settle for now, also my jobs don't require the best so upgrading is only my own initiative. But I don't understand why u would rather upgrade my Oktaba when it's sound is far better than the shotgun I have (4073) shouldn't I be looking to upgrade my shotgun first it I was upgrading the mics? Or can the mbho use a capsule that can replace the shotgun?

And I know you will probably scream at me, but what about one of those hand held recorders with two XLR inputs 2 channels and 48/24 and SD card slots.. if they have TC?
(just for the time being) Like the H4 for $300 It looks like a hassle to carry, those buttons look dangerous, but if it isn't noisy..?

Or maybe get the cheap Sennheiser transmitter for $200 more..?

why to upgrade the oktava , as i dont see to much why do you need to upgade the best bang for the buck shotgun :-).
i dint use the zoom 4 but it culd be good enouth for you .
i dont like the g-2 for how it sounds and compress , add hiss to the audio .
loosing range over the corner .
so its your money and you will deside what you need .
about zaxcom tx /rx ( stereo ) it about 5 grand for complete set
better start whith something more usifull for you .
used - try to find as people change now the models , the old tx can acsept mic levels only .

i have one and it works exellent for documentary **** but for drama it alwais acable or double system
best

Ok, so I called K-Tek and they will take in my boom to upgrade to a 12 foot carbon... that's figured out, just have to get the money

About the recorder vs. G-2:
I see you don't like the sound of it, and you think the little H4 recorder from zoom might be just fine, so long as it is as good as people say it is noise wise. The problem is that I will grow out of it well... out of both really, so I am thinking that since they would both be sold maybe one of them has a better use for me down the line..? I was thinking the G-2 would be more useful long term, but the H4 might be better quality now..? Though I am worried about how it might work in a bag (buttons), or how it would look on a strap if I tried using it for a gig to save a $100 a day for a 704T :D

what's the rental for the cheapest transmitter-reciever you would use Oleg? I think I asked you once and you said to get an old Lectro that rented for like $40, but I can't remember the model
