Kobe jumps over an Aston Martin!

Aston Martins aren't very tall. They are a little over 4 feet I believe. I'm sure any basketball player has a vertical jump of over 3 feet and then combine that with tucking the knees in. Totally possible.

I'm sure Kobe is quite capable of making this verticle jump to clear the car.

However, I don't think Jerry Buss would sign off on having his multi-million dollar
player pulling a stunt like this. Especially now that they're starting to gell coming into the playoffs.

...it's free publicity, gets people talking, sells shoes and tickets...

Is it possible for Kobe to jump over a car? Most likely. Has he ever done it? Probably not. Did he do it in that commercial? Definitely not.

Jumping over a speeding car is a very dangerous stunt, no matter how tall the car is. We're talking about metal and glass moving quickly towards you. One wrong move and your career is over. There is NO WAY Kobe (or his wife, coach, and agent) would risk his entire career for a stupid stunt when they could easily fake it with a few minutes of post-production.

As Kobe said, "It's Hollywood, baby." So it doesn't matter how real it looks, he didn't jump the car. Period.

It's not compositing Jack. The car is just to his right. So he's not jumping over anything. Either that, or ya it's CGI.

Yeah the long-take profile view is the easiest way to fake it. The engine noise isn't realistic and the car looks fake as it drives by.

if you pause it right as the car approaches it looks like kobe is about 3 feet to the left of the approaching car.

i am not sure if its compositing or whatever but ronnie turiaf looked pretty legitimately hyped after kobe cleared it.

Guys you're nuts if you think that's real. You know how many millions of dollars are riding on that guy?

Ad Agency: Kobe, we'd like you to jump over car that's moving full speed at you and it won't be stopping at all. If you sneeze your career and potentially your life is over.
Kobe: Awesome where do I sign?

The whole reason it works is because he actually could do it. But there would just be no reason on God's green Earth for him to do so. So ... the car drives by with no Kobe in the shot ... then maybe they play the car back and put a little piece of gaff tape where the top of the car is on the monitor, then shoot Kobe by himself and make sure he clears the mark.

Get your laptop out on set, make sure you've got the two shots by laying one over the other at 50% opacity and call it a wrap.

See me get hit by a car at the end of 18 Seconds. Same difference.

I don't doubt that he can jump that high. I know his dozens of handlers and people that own a piece of him wouldn't let him do it when an 8th grader could do a forensics quality VFX version of the shot with a powerbook and a DVX.

Makes no friggin' since the other way around.

So many of my friends are like "OMG REAL" and I keep saying basically the same thing everyone else has said "Why would he put his career on the line?".

I could create the same video of myself doing that in half an hour.

Especially with that static shot.

I just can't believe how all you VIDEO GUYS keep falling for this crap... really... you gotta' be kidding me.

Either the car was totally composited or Kobe and his buddy were in front of a cyc wall... flip a coin. Kobe isn't taking risks like this... although I saw a vid of Shaq ducking under bus at the last second... now THAT was real.

It's like the awesome PS2 commercials where it looks amateur intentionally... just to further sell the effect.

As Jack pointed out... it could even be done as easily as a moving matte... similar to a wipe.

I can't believe this is even a discussion.
What I'm waiting for is the punk a$$ kids who are going to try this and get splattered.
A way of cleansing the gene pool I guess.......
