FCP 6.0.2 crashes in log and transfer window while importing P2 content

I just bought a new 2008 Macpro, dual 2.8ghz (8 core) 8GB RAM, OSX 10.5.2, QT 7.4.1, FCP 6.0.2. I updated everything after setting it all up.

The first time I used FCP I needed to import P2 content from P2 folders that I copied to my internal 750GB SATA drive. The system drive is the stock 320GB.

When I have the P2 folders open in the log and transfer window and I select different clips to preview and rename it has crashed on me 3 times so far. I get the spinning wheel for a second or two then FCP completely disappears and I get the quit unexpectedly error.

Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution? Should QT be at an earlier version than 7.4.1?

thanks,
Curtis

Repair permissions, trash preferences. This is the exact system I have (except I am 3.0Ghz) and P2 import works fine.

ok I'll try that.

Software update just popped up and QT 7.4.5 is available today.... Maybe I should be a brave one and be one of the first to try it since my system is new anyway.

well repair permissions and trash prefs didn't work. I just had FCP quit on me again.

I think I will try updating QT.

Just updated to QT 7.4.5 and it still "unexpectedly quit" on me....

It's great to spend a ton of money on something that doesn't work right.

Are you importing directly from a camera (e.g. hvx 200) or folders containing P2 data? If using the camera directly, try using the USB connection on the cam (my Imac does not support firewire, but usb works great). If you are importing P2 from copied folders, I would check that they are properly copied. (I have not done this, as I always import directly from the cam, but I read there are specific ways to copy P2 cards so the data does not get corrupted. Also if importing directly from cam, Write protect the P2 cards and mount again.) These are my hints.
Best of luck!

I have always copied the P2 folders to a FW drive on my old Titanium G4 powerbook. Then I either import the footage through FCP on from the FW drive or I copy the folders to the internal SATA drive and then import. I have done it this way for almost a year and a half with no problems on my dual 2.7ghz G5 running Tiger with FCP 5.1.4.

Then I got the Macpro with all the current software updates and I have the crashing problem using the same workflow. I still have the G5 but I had a different problem with it starting up so I formatted the drive and instead of loading all the old software I decided to clone the system from my Macpro to the G5 (before knowing I had the crashing problem with FCP). I still need to test importing P2 footage on the G5 and see if it crashes or not.

I just finished importing footage on my G5 successfully. I removed the SATA drive that has the P2 folders on it from my Macpro, installed it in the G5 and everything works fine. This is an identical system that was cloned from the Macpro to the G5 using Carbon Copy Cloner. The only difference is that I haven't updated from QT 7.4.1 to 7.4.5 on the G5 yet. (FCP quits unexpectedly on the Macpro with both QT versions)

So could this be a hardware problem with the Macpro? I'm running out of ideas and things to try...

Update: I just had it crash with the G5 also. But it was with 5 P2 folders open that has 393 clips. The Macpro crashes with multiple P2 folders or just one.

I used to import footage from multiple P2 folders all the time on my G5 running OS 10.4.x with FCP 5.1.4. Never had a problem although it made it a little more sluggish with allot of P2 folders & clips open.

Does anyone else import from allot of P2 folders at a time or do you just do one or two at a time?

Another update:

My G5 is running solid again, I reinstalled OS 10.4.11, QT 7.2 and FC Studio 1 (FCP 5.1.4).

The Macpro has a fresh reinstall of Leopard and FC Studio 2. I held off on updating anything to try and see if FCP crashes in the log and transfer window for P2 importing, and it does...
Next step was downgrading from QT 7.4.1 to 7.3.1 to see if that was the problem and it still crashes.

Now I am installing Leopard on a separate internal drive with FC Studio 1 to see if that works. And I partitioned that drive so I can install Tiger on it and try FC Studio 2 as well. Maybe one of these combinations will work....

Does anyone have a 2008 Macpro (or any Intel machine..) running Leopard and FC Studio 2 that can reliably import DVCPRO HD footage in the log and transfer window? (So far only Shane Ross has said that he does) If so how many P2 folders do you open in log and transfer at a time? Do you have any problems with allot of clips in those folders, in the hundreds? (although I have had it crash with only one P2 folder with about 15 clips)

I don't have the same set up you have but when I capture P2 from a copied FW drive I make sure to copy exactly what each P2 Card had on it.

In other words, when I'm on set I create folders for each Offload per p2 card. I store these to a FW drive. I then hook the FW drive up to my G5 and capture each folder or each P2 Offload done that day. I generally have about 4 or 5 folders filled each with 16 GB of footage.

Did you copy over the last txt file? I've read that you should always copy that file first then continue to copy the contents folder (in that order).

Good luck

Yes I do the same thing. I have used my old Powerbook G4 and FW drive to offload P2 cards since I got the camera in December of 2006. No problems at all with the G5 for importing for over a year.

I have a hard time believing it is anything other than a software issue at this point. Something to do with Leopard and/or FCP 6.

I have also successfully imported footage from P2 folders on a FW 400 drive on my Macbook (Intel) that has Tiger and FCP 5.1.4 on it. So I don't think it's an Intel machine issue either.

EDIT: I forgot to add that the same exact P2 folders that crash on the Macpro import fine on the G5. I have tested multiple with either one or two folders or up to five of them at once in the log and transfer window. So it's not a P2 problem or corrupt footage.

I just finished testing the second system drive in the Macpro. I installed Leopard and FC Studio 1. I didn't update anything other than the Studio apps and got FCP to 5.4.1. Tested the P2 import and it works fine.

Next: Updated OSX to 10.5.2. Still works fine.

That's it for tonight but in the morning I will update QT from 7.4.1 up to 7.4.5 and see what happens.

scrolling through clips in the P2 import window seems allot snappier in FCP 5.1.4 than FCP 6.0.1 or 6.0.2 did in Leopard. I could get FCP 6x to crash within a minute or so each time I tested it.

I just updated QT to 7.4.5 and did some other random updates that were available. FCP 5.1.4 still works fine in the P2 import window (in Leopard 10.5.2).

If others are running FCP 6.x in Leopard successfully (for P2 importing) could I have a bad set of install disks maybe???

Justin, Are you running Leopard and FC Studio 2 (FCP 6.0.2) ?

The problems Shane had were with Tiger and the FX plugins. I have Leopard with FCP 6.0.2 and it crashes with no plugins installed. I have even formated the drive and reinstalled everything trying it without making updates, and then doing updates one at a time and it still crashes each time.

I saw Shane post in that thread that Leopard and a base install of FC Studio 2 works. But in my case that is not true. Leopard only works with FC Studio 1 (FCP 5.1.4)

EDIT: I just saw that FCP 6.0.3 is out. I will try that in Leopard next and report back.
