I think Walken is fantastic but it was tough to watch him reading directly from the cue cards all night. I know that a lot of hosts use them from time to time but this was really painfully obvious.

There were still some funny skits and he always brings something interesting to his performances. I just found it really distracting this go around.

Anyone else catch the show?

He's done that a few times on SNL where he's clearly reading his lines. It almost makes it funnier to me.

Yes, I realize this. I'm a big fan of his. This time though he didn't seem to make an effort to even look in the direction of the other actors.

I still enjoyed some of the skits, as I said. Loved his opening as well.

anyone got youtube highlights from teh show as i didnt watch it and i'm sure i'll catch in repeats but i'd like to see if thre was antyhing funny this time around.

he should have rehearsed a little more. i thought the sketch he seemed the most natural in was the one about they guy that was scared of plants. overall though, he was still a lot funnier than most hosts. my favorite was when he gave the portrait to that guy at the going away party.

I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

Anyway, I didn't see him this go around, but I think we can all agree that old school SNL could kick today's SNL's ass thrice a day. Still, it has its funny parts.

Absotively. That skit with the employee going away, I figured that was intentional that he wasn't looking the guy in the eye....but it was pretty bad.

The Walken family reunion thing was NF (not funny) IMO.

The best thing of the night was the Lasercat digital short. My pug was charging the TV screen when the puppy was on.

And there was no cowbell skit. That was lame.

i consider the last "old school" cast to be the one with sandler, farley, myers, nealon, and hartman. once all those guys left, the show got dramatically worse.

Agreed. In the beginning, they struck comedy gold. Now, sure it has its funny skits, but it is nothing compared to what it used to be. I should have made myself clear previously, it seemed like those two thoughts were supposed to go together when they weren't.

I don't think it's any too controversial to say that the best cast was the one they had 30 years ago, and the second best was the cast from 20 years ago.

Considering the original cast, you'll simply never get that kind of comedy power on the same stage again.

My personal favorite period was from '86 to '91, so I'm with you guys on that (the bloom fell off the rose when Miller left Weekend Update). It was "must watch!" then. It hasn't been since.

Absolutely, David. Back when the whole gang was there (Dana Carvey, Danny DeVito, Jon Lovitz) it was hilarious. They all played so well off of eachother and were able to improv spectacularly to create something amazing, to create magic. That magic has since faded.

Still, it has its funny parts.

Kristen Wiig is brilliant. She's the only reason I still watch SNL. (Well, her and Laser Cats)

BTW, the chances of me knowing the band of the week is like 1 in 6. I'm officially out of touch with pop culture. The Arcade Fires? Panic at the who did what now????
