10 dollar prize for best asnwer
i need all you experts to give me the best advice and solve this problem for me PLEASE. because of money issues we shot our short film in 3 different formats 1080 i 60 on a firewire drive 720p on the same firewire and sd on DV tape. we shot the HD stuff for los angeles and the DV stuff to look like afghanistan so they don't need to match shot to shot just look the best they possibly can as we innercut from scene to scene.(the dv stuff looks sooo good by itself and the HD looks sooo good both 1080 and 720 but i need it all to look good at the same time) we have tried different timelines and such a hd timeline and pulling out the dv and a dv timeline and shrinking and matting the HD...... i need to know the best way to do this (using other programs if needs be) and the best way to output it to dvd we are having motion issues and quality isssues when we make a dvd but everything looks beautiful in FCP (what programs and settings ) I need an answer please we have a pretty good project and want it to be as technically good looking as the subject matter is (vets adjusting back to civilian life after iraq)

Get instant HD from red giant here. Link.
Use it to upconvert footage as needed.
Get the Nattress Standards Conversion here. Link
Use it to convert your 60i to 24p as needed.

Don't you have a a recent version of FCP? It should all work in a single timeline... anywho, pick a size/format. Whatever you pick, make any footage that isn't that size/format, match it. Then you can have the same source stuff across the board.

For your short film, what's your final output? That should be a factor in your decision. Next time shoot it all the same!

Good luck

Ah... the trappings of HD.

I was watching Frontline last night with a lot of stuff shot by guys with mini cameras couldn't quite tell what they were... maybe they were small hd units... in Iraq and of course a lot of professional interview shot stuff. ALL worked well together.

Compressor will up rez your dv stuff too... not the best, but free.

Good luck, let us know which works best for you!!

What version of FCP are you using? You should be able to put all of the stuff in the same timeline and just export it/print it to tape like you would any other project.

Depending on your setup, you might have to render 1/3rd or 2/3rds of your footage but it should work without buying RedGiant or anything else. If your problem is dealing with rendering, then this is what I'd do:
- choose what format you want to finish with. My guess would be one of the HD formats so you're not downrezzing everything.
- Create two timelines set up for the finishing format (lets say HD 1080i) In one timeline put all your DV footage. Render it and then export it as QT files in the HD 1080i format. Do the same thing for your 720p footage.
- When it's all done, you can re-import all of it into a 1080i timeline and just work from there.

But if you have the newest FCP, you shouldn't even have to go through all of that. You should be able to edit everything in the same timeline and FCP does the work for you.

If the main issue is that you're having trouble outputting it to dvd, I'd have to ask what you're currently using. I'd suggest exporting a QT reference file and importing it into compressor. Compressor can be a little intimidating the first time, but it has all kinds of presets and you should be able to create a DVD without motion and quality issues.

Keep in mind, however, that a normal DVD is going to be SD and not HD, so you will lose some of the quality simply due to the number of pixels in any given frame. If you want specific compressor settings, let us know and we'll see if we can figure something out for you.
