NTG-2 or what shotgun for around $300?

There are better but their merit is reflected in their prices. In this general budget category the Rodes are an excellent value and better sounding than a number of more expensive offerings. Go ahead, but study up and be realistic about what you can expect from ANY shotgun - if you mount it on the camera even the most expensive top-shelf professional mic costing more than 10 times the Rode is going to be mediocre sounding at best.
 
Yea I understand i'm not going to get perfection from a camera mounted mic but i am looking for a bit better than what I'm getting from the built-in :) if I could hire boommic guy all the time I would :) //g
