rycote softie a lot better than rode deadcat?

sorry to follow this on from another thread but am in need of an answer quickly & no dealers i asked could seem to answer consistently - using a rode ntg2 the rode deadcat struggles in breezy conditions, is the rycote softie significantly better at protecting & therefore worth buying?
also wondered if my sabra som shockmount (cross banded) would be strong enough to hold it or do i need to purchase the rycote mount that goes with the softie?
any help would be greatly appreciated, thankyou

It is better, but not awfull much better. It there is a real wind, only a zeppelin/windjammer works.

thankyou, yes the zeppelin was what i initially wanted but as most of the time i am on my own & need to place the mic on the camera (i know.....), i was told that a zeppelin was too much to put on camera & the softie was a more suitable option. there seems to be a windjammer (costing more than the softie!!) that they sell that goes over the softie, would that combination be my best bet? could i just get another windjammer to place over the deadcat i already have as a cheaper alternative? sorry for all the questions but there's other equipment i need too & so i want to get the best i can with the money I have

i must be honest, i almost never use anything except my softie. i have a zeppelin, but it nearly never comes out the bag... the thing about the softies is that the better condition you keep them in, the better they work - more nicely combed hair, better wind killing.

so think about where you live, how much wind there is, what shoots you plan on doing, and how often you actually need heavy wind protection for your mic. usually guys that shoot by the sea need those zeps more than guys like me that work inland. thats the best advice i can give based on my own experience. :)

great advice, thanks, think im going to take the plunge & get 1, it has to be better than the rode thing, my only query now is whether my sabra som will be able to handle the extra weight or if i need to buy the rycote shocmount as well, sure hope not

tee hee, i'm english but with you on that one, rycote isn't cheap - i keep buying stuff from the u.s. cause here in england we get skanked price wise - funnily enough the rycote softie is cheaper for me to get from u.s. rather than on my doorstep. the k-tek fuzzy is similarly priced in the u.s to the rycote, is it as good, i know they do good stuff cause i've got 1 of their boompoles? they don't seem to sell in the uk though - i see there is a big difference in the zeppelin prices for each company in the u.s. & would go with k-ek zep, but as i'm mainly using it on camera thought the softie would be more suitable

if you need ktek fury , i can send you one from here
probably the same as in usa , the shipping is around 20 bucks with fast ems

thanks for the offer oleg, i need quite a few other bits & bobs so will probably order them all together, but thinking about getting the softie or k-tek fuzzy without shockmount - will get in touch if i get just the fuzzy

No prob!

Hey mods: could you at least inform us why you edit a post?
Sth like: "We really appreciate your input, but shut the funk up now!"
You should know how filmmakers feel about others cutting reediting their masterpieces:D
Night!

Spartacus,
Your post was edited after cleaning up some bickering and arguing in this thread.
There was nothing wrong with what you had posted, but it made no sense after other posts were removed.

All good:beer:
But I demand a "Directors Cut" section for threads now:evil:!
And then an "Extended Version" section.
And not to forget the DVD market with "Posts gone wild I-VII" and "Inside dvxuser"...

Ok, I just woke up...:2vrolijk_08:

deadcat is ...

deadcat is ...

Buy the Zepellin. You need something *much* better than the deadcat.

Agree deadcats and slip-ons are okay. Don't get me wrong slip-on style windscreens do work. But if your really concerned about wind noise full softies and puffin's are the way to go. They eliminate the wind noise completely and run you $60-120 on average. Slip-ons run you $20-99 on average.

Hope this helps everyone :)

Saved money!

Ktek I believe is the least expensive for a quality product.

Well I just ordered my micover puffin today. Total came to $65 with shipping. I'm just glad I didn't spend a lot.. I'm on a budget and from what I can tell the micover is exactly the same thickness, foam, fur as the others.

This was my research:

K-Tek Zeppelin - Slip-On $100-110 (Quality)
Rycote - Softies $110 (Quality)
Micover Puffin $60.. (Quality, more affordable to the independent audio engineers)
