turn HD footage into DV "looking" footage

I have some hd 720p footage that i'd like to make look like it came from a crappy minidv camera.... should I just grain it up?

I'd also like to add an overlay that says "REC" in the top corner etc....

Has anyone had experience doing this?

desaturate it ad a little bit of grain and go into effects-filters-video-viewfinder. That has the record on it

Final cut 6 also has a motion effect called BAD TV which is useful. You can manipulate the grain, waviness, scan line thickness.

another thing to think about is to actually transcode it to another codec with a low quaility setting, and personally I'd make my own overlay instead of the filter because I don't like the way it looks, but that's just me

agreed the viewfinder effect is corny because its basicaly an apple preset

I wouldn't put the viewfinder thing over it at all. It's not even realistic as no camera actually records that to tape and probably most consumer cameras wouldn't show a tile safe indicator over the video.

Careful with the "bad TV" preset, especially if you plan to release your video on the web. It can be easy to overdo, and can really end up looking bad if you add to much effect.

to make a blinking overlay would I just add a gap between the image on the timeline?
