Rebel With a Cause - Isara doc - Official Announcement

Nice one, Elvis. :)

Luis - Thanks for all your help and support. We really do appreciate you taking the time to go all the way into Houston to help with the interviews.

Good luck, thartley!!! Have a great time visiting my family and the Lone Star State.

Hey P.K. Terry and Barry if there is a chance I could do something as a Director / Producer let me know via P.M.

Wow, I only just found this thread. Not too long ago I discovered Isara for the amazing organization it is, and the moment I made this discovery I changed my hompage and hopped into Photoshop to make the banner you now see in my signature.

I just finished the exhaustive task of reading through this thread, but it is worth it. Nothing good ever comes easy, they say. This is a fantastic project and I commend all those who are putting forth such a great effort.

I know this has been said a lot already, but I mean it from the bottom of my heart: if there is ANYTHING I can do to help, do not hesitate to ask. I know they call Coarsegold, California the capitol of the world, meaning the chances of you landing here are extremely high. (My apologies for the sarcasm.)

That being said, there isn't much I won't do to help.* I wish I could take the time off to go to Thailand, but at this juncture it is simply not possible. I am hoping to make it over there to help out in a couple of years, though.

But in the meantime, I better wrap up this post. Let me know if you need any assistance from here (or just in general) and I will gladly do whatever I can. I think this is a great idea, just like Isara itself, and again I commend all those involved. Good luck, and I look forward to the possibility of working with you all soon.

*This statement, which is at high risk of opening the floodgates, does not mean I will ride nude on a moose through the city, nor does it mean I am willing to sell myself as a slave to any over worked DVXuser. That being said, I think anything else should be fine.

 Cheers,

Luis, you look like you are still online here. Thought you were going to Houston tonight. :D See you tomorrow...or later today. I can't sleep. Maybe on the plane.

Maybe.

Certainly, not in the rental car, since I will be driving.
in Houston.

My alarm is going to tell me to go get in the shower in 2 hrs and 45 mins.

*sigh*

Guess I will go lay back down on the inflatabed.

For the record I was already in Houston when I made that last post (and am still in Houston now)

JUST got back from meeting tHartley and PK's brothers.
Things went well (I hope).

The apartment we were shooting in was awfully small and I think Terri and I were both a bit terrified that we were going to break something as we moved gear around the room (we had a few close calls).

PK's brothers had some great stories to tell of the young PK they knew growing up.
I won't spoil any of them... you'll have to wait for the film to be finished.
:)

Hopefully now tHartley can find her way to Wimberly without too much trouble.
We packed up her rental car full of lighting gear and sent her on her way.

Finished up just in time for her to get out of Houston before rush hour traffic started... whew.
:)

This is awesome. I'm glad to hear that you've started shooting. I can't wait to hear more (and help in any way I can).

This is an incredibly important event in the life of DVXUser. I'll be following it closely. Best of luck on the project, Terri...and safe travels.

I'm stoked to have Luis on board; having more DVXUsers is always a good thing. I think we're up to five DVXUsers on the doc so far...

Well, if moral support counts, then you can up that to 6 DVXUsers

Just wanted to wish everyone involved the best of luck. What you guys are doing is awesome. Can't wait to see the final product.

PK, I've followed Isara from DVXuser for a few years as a lurker, I'm always checking out the Isara site for updates on the projects you guys are working on. What you guys are accomplishing is truly amazing. Good on you man. Keep up the great work everyone.

Jason

I have safely arrived in Wimberley. I have not had a chance to review the tape as I am just in the door. I am posting here even before food, coffee and shower (not necessarily in that order!)

The stories and interview questions today, I feel, just started scratching the surface of things and I look forward to the rest of this project! PK's brothers were both great and very interesting to talk with.

Luis, I've said it elsewhere, and I will say it again. Thank you sooo much for today. I dont know what I would have done without you. I actually don't quite know what I did WITH you, but I know I was there. You are a wonderful person to work with and really went above and beyond what you were probably expecting to do. Your gear is safe, btw. No accidents on the road, etc.

I'm off for those things I mentioned up there.... its been a helluva day!

Awesome to see this project rolling along. Its great to see that no matter where there is an interview there's going to be a dvxuser to help out! Cant wait to see this and help if needed! Keep up the good work!

Kick ass.

One of the best things about DVXUser is the community, and this proves it!

I've been around the site for a little while and have always known from the beginning there was a real feeling of "family" to some extent here online. Then people were actually working and collaborating together, and making things happen. It is VERY cool to know that there is this link between so many people.

Luis not only worked on this project for us today in Houston, but he has used his contacts and gotten us someone to come light the interviews tomorrow here in Wimberley also.

Thanks for all your help, Luis. :) Hopefully you didn't have to listen to too many boring stories about my childhood. Here's some pics Terri just sent from yesterdays shoot.

And thanks to everyone else for their support and encouragement with this project.

Today Terri surprised my Mom by bringing a special guest to the interview. Sounds like a Jerry Springer moment, but it turned out to be more like an Oprah one. Terri you're awesome!!!!

Once Terri arrives in Thailand on April 8th (just in time for the Song Kran water festival) we'll have regular updates with plenty of BTS pics.

Day 2.

Today we shot interviews with mama and papa Gillock. I have to give big props to DVXuser Shirazj. Luis hooked us up with Shiraz to come out to Wimberley, Texas from Austin to set up lighting for the interviews. THANK YOU SHIRAZ! You were a very patient and kind person to come out and help on this project!

As PK mentioned, I also had a "surprise guest" on location today. One of the forum moderators of Isara.org flew out to Texas this morning. I picked her up in Austin and drove back to Wimberley for the interviews. She was also being interviewed to talk about the website aspect of PK's work overseas, and the impact such ready access to charitable giving has on the rest of us so far removed geographically from the scene where it all happens.

I've been trying to remember to get some stills each day we are shooting. But sometimes its not so easy to remember to do that. I got a few from Day 1 but can't do much to resize them for hosting and posting. But we're working on it. I dont have a photo editor on my laptop at the moment.

edit: Thanks for posting the pics, PK! :D
Tomorrow will be some footage from around Wimberley. Some individual interview time with PK's mother, and more with the moderator.

Right now, its time for SLEEP! :)

Well, the weekend shoots have all been wrapped up for this time around in Texas. There are others we will need to get interviews with here in Texas but timing and location were a bit of a problem. I've been in Houston, Austin, and Wimberley since I arrived on Thursday.

I was able to get interviews with both of Kirk's brothers, his mother and his father, and two different interviews with one of the moderators of Isara.org. The sky here in Wimberely was really overcast and the outside scenery was just screaming to be part of the doc, so I thought I would get the second interview with the moderator while taking advantage of the naturally diffused light from the sky. When I thought I had the best spot picked out on the back deck of where I am staying, a nearby hot tub pump (or jets or heater or whatever) kicked on. And I could hear traffic at times from the nearby road, so I moved to the side of the building where there would be a natural sound barrier made by the building itself. So I stood there and listened. Seemed pretty good, right up until an a/c unit kicked on. I could have turned that off, but when the plane started flying overhead, I said to heck with it and moved the shoot back indoors.

The lighting inside was not very good, its not very bright, nothing bright enough to bounce. So we found a nice corner in one of the rooms that had french doors we could open the blinds all the way up, we used two different lamps, and then opened up the closet door which was white in order to bounce the sunlight coming in from the outside. LOL! For such a bootlegged method of lighting by someone who does not know how to light, I think it looked pretty good. The subject was kind of flat because I didnt have the resource or the know-how to get that one light (a hair light?) to separate the interviewee from the background, but I thought it was okay. Here are a couple of shots where we were beginning to get things set up.

I am really really bad at making sure I get BTS stills. Once I am at the location, I go right to setting up my equip for shooting. And the fact that we had people donating their time to be on set to light for us on the other shoots this weekend, I didn't want to take up more of their time than was necessary.

I will try to be better about that in the future. :furious3:

I'll be flying back out to Florida tomorrow and finalizing things for my departure to Thailand on April 7.
