Need answer quick! Is the Nikon 80-200 2.8 D good for 35mm adaptors?

Looking to get this lens for my Brevis. Will it work fine (excellent?)? It's autofocus but I can put it to manual right? Anyone using this lens with their adaptor please give me your thoughts quick! I think I'm looking at the model at number 4. on this Ken Rockwell page.

EDIT: Is it SHARP with a capital 'S' at 2.8?

Note: I'll also be using it on my D80.

Thanks!

Ian

it's very sharp, breathes but not too bad, short focus throw, has hard stops.

basically, it can make very good images so if you can put up with the focus throw it's a great buy.

Thanks. More info for you, it's apparently the AFD ED nikkor twist version.

What is "short focus throw"?

re: "short focus throw" - because it is an auto-focus lens, the focus dial/distance is a lot 'closer together'. eg: to pull from infinitiy to min distance will be a lot quicker than pulling with manual focus lens, extreme example being a prime. what this limits to is a lot less 'room for error' with focusing. regardless of this, if judging by peaking, you can still achieve accurate focus. i use the nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 (without manual aperture ring) and have NO problem focussing example. :)

F^^^!!!!! I tried to stop the bidding site (justsnipe) from bidding for me and guess what, the site hung!!!! F####!!!

Did I just pay over 700 bucks for something I can't use with my adaptor????

since you are wanting it for adapter use, the slower autofocus (compared to the more expensive version) shouldn't phase you. i imagine it should would very well with your adapter. and around 700 is good, providing lens condition is accurate description.

The lens is supposedly in fantastic condition. So the lense is ok to be used with my brevis though? That's my concern, that it's compatible.

Nice footage btw Charles.

TMNT, I have that very lens and its brilliant for 35mm adaptors. In fact I use three lenses. 17-35mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, and 80-200 2.8.

You got a great lens so don't fret.

Ah thank baby Jesus for that (and you guys). I can't tell you how worried/pissed I was at the prospect of spending all that dosh and it being incompatible - I'm an impulse buyer, can't help it. lol.

I see Charlie uses the exact lenses you mentioned, I'm going to sell all my Canon FD's and get the 17-35 2.8 and the 50mm. I already have the 100mm E series (2.8 I think) and it's a little gem.

What can you expect to pay for the 17-35 in great condition? Is there a specific example of it I should try to buy? (so I can use it well with both my D80 and brevis).

Is the 50mm 1.4 the best to get? (nikkor is it?) Better bokeh than the 1.8s?

thanks a million guys - I wouldn't have slept w/o all your advice.

Ian

The 17-35mm 2.8 is this one.

Heavy and superbly made. Very wide and sharp at 4.0 - 5.6. As its so wide thats the effect you get, so DOF is not really something to aim for with the wider side of the lens.

Normally a very clean and perfect second hand one goes for £500-600, perhaps a tad more. Not cheap but you get a hell of a lens.

Don't buy Tamron or Sigma.

The 50mm 1.2 is great and not too expensive. I use one all the time. Heavy and superb build. very fast and beter than the 1.4.

Hope that helps.

This thread quite a coincidence as we are in the process of sourcing the 17-35 f2.8 and the 80-200 f2.8 discussed in this thread for our Nikon mount test collection. I came to the conclusion after a lot of research that for new lenses, these two are near the top of the heap for full frame Nikon zoom lenses with manual aperture.

The 17-35 is not only well regarded for sharpness at f4 (so much lower than most) but also displays remarkably low edge falloff. This makes it perfect for lens adapters, and if our testing goes well, we'll add it to our list of recommend lenses. The 80-200, comes very highly remcommend too, although both are tanks. Check the Nikon 17-35mm lens review over at reduser.net ... worth a read: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=676

Steve, your lens collection is precisely what I'd arrived at as a good Nikon set, so it's great to read your thoughts on them :-)

The nikon "twist" as you call it is probably not a good one to use on those adapters. The better one would be the IF models. These are internal focusing models, which have a better manual focusing system than the twist. I use my 80-200mm 2.8 Nikon IF-AFS. I use it with the RedRock M2, and I love it. Havent used the brevis, but you should have a support for it, cause of the weight it may eventually damage the mounting ring on the adapter.

Okay, where do I find a Nikon 80-200mm IF-AFS f2.8 lens? All I've found are 80-200mm f2.8 ED only.

50mm 1.4 is a great lens. Great. You can always find one for about $100 US as they are so many of them out there. 1.2 is not going to make enough difference to justify the higher cost, IMHO.

Seriously, I have shot with a 50mm 1.4 Ai lens for almost 10 years, and it has always been my sharpest, most reliable Nikkor lens. Any camera shop will have one for sale, and KEH always has several too, so you don't have to take your chances with ebay.

Thanks a lot. That 1.2 sounds nice but that's a lot of money for a 50mm! I might just get a 1.8 (or 1.4 if decent price) for the mean time.

I've read mixed reports about whether the 1.2 is better than the 1.4. Some say the opposite. i've never seen one.
The IF 80-200 is much more expensive. Prob $1200 used.
The 80-200 with 2 rings tends to run around $750 - 800 plus or minus used I think.
I have an 80 -200 2.8 push pull available for $575 (plus shipping and paypal 3%). Very sharp and a savings over the 2 rings if money matters.
