What the f... ZACUTO Adapter !?

Dark Side of the Camera
Zacuto is developing a new kind of depth-of-field adapter using technologies never tried before. Here's the product in a nutshell - we are not using any motors or moving the rephotographing screen in any way. With our new patented technology we are getting the beter light throughput than any of the current DOF adapters on the market. It's sharpness, color and clarity are also far superior to what is currently available. More specs. to come. Many of the DP's we have talked to have complained about the ground glass systems that are currently available, saying that even though the rephotographing screens are moving they can still see the ground glass which makes the image milky and soft on video. Besides being low resolution, ground glass is a poor transmitter of light. We have changed our device slightly since our original design with these parameters in mind: excellent light throughput; edge to edge balancing of light and sharpness; color balancing between all lenses; manipulation of the image as few times as possible starting from the camera's CCD to the end of the Zeiss ZF lens; and to have the unit be universal and able to move between cameras.

What did you expect from a company that sales simple $8 12-inch rods for $85?

At least they have a set of Zeiss lenses comming with it...

This info has been around for a while.

Also, you guys don't have to buy EVERYTHING. Might be a good rental.

yeah.... they have some cool stuff coming down the road. Like a follow focus and some other cool stuff. Zacuto's approach to the adapter would be quite interesting to see.

You Californians and your rentals must be nice to rent what you need...oh yeah that's because there is rental house on every corner. No rental houses here.

That thing has been in development for about as long as the G35. Part of me thinks that they scrapped the idea and forgot to take down the page. Does anyone know when/if it's supposed to come out?

They probably scrapped it because at 12-15K, you have a lot of options. At what point does the HVX become the weak link in that system? By the time you had sticks, a matte box and monitor plus that ZCA system you'd be at like $35K for the whole rig.

I'd do RED before I did that.

The cone shaped "Zacuto camera adapter" looksk an awful lot like a glass fibre optic bundle. Incredible light transmission, very little loss, and a great image transfer. I saw one recently (unpolished) on ebay for a couple hundred bucks. Someone else here on the boards was talking about buying one to make an adapter.

If you ask me, cone shaped design don't automatically mean only glass fibre optic bundle. For my thinking, that element would be to heavy for camera thread..

I would think of Schmidt-Pechan prism before optic fibre element..

And it remembers me on cinemek's years long waiting also..
